99% Clean Windows VISTA x64 install on Sony VAIO VGN-SZ330P/B

After reading many posts on Sony VAIO laptops and VISTA x64, I decided to give it a go as well on my VGN-SZ330P/B.
I was able to have almost everything working, except for the built-in Sony Visual Communication Camera VGP-VCC2 Webcam.

If anyone finds a 64 bit driver for the “USB\VID_05CA&PID_1830” VCC2 I would greatly appreciate it! I found the VCC3,4,6,8 but no luck on the VCC2.

Anyways, I’ve been running it for almost a month now, no crashes and very stable. To contribute, here’s what I did to have everything working!

These first 16 Steps will install Vista x64 SP1 clean with all required drivers.
Everything will be functional expect where the Sony Apps are required: Fn Keys, S1-S2 Buttons, HDD Protection and the Built-in EDGE Broadband Modem. (That’s all in steps 17-22)

Purpose: Only adds the drivers for the Built-in Ericsson VDC EGPRS Broadband Modem to the OS.

Steps 17-22 are to install the Software from Sony. It will enable the rest of the functions.
Please note, some functions are still limited, probably because no x64 DMICall Driver were released.
I used higher version of software from another laptop, since the software provided for the SZ330P/B are simply not working in an x64 environment.

[17] Install Sony Shared Library 4.1.00.09190

    Source: ftp://ftp.vaio-link.com/pub/VAIO/ORIGINAL/
Installation Method: Run Setup.exe located in the VAIO Event Service 3.3 folder
    Purpose: Enables the Fn keys
Additional Information: The brightness function does not seem to work, maybe due to the DMICall driver.

[20] Install Setting Utility Series 2.1.00.14150
    File: SZ6_UTILITIES.ZIP
    ftp://ftp.vaio-link.com/pub/VAIO/ORIGINAL/SZ6_UTILITIES.ZIP
    Source: ftp://ftp.vaio-link.com/pub/VAIO/ORIGINAL/
Installation Method: Run Setup.exe located in the \Utilities\Utils Installer Setting Utility Series folder
    Purpose: Enables the S1-S2 Buttons
Additional Information: The configuration of the buttons does not seem to work, maybe due to the DMICall driver.
However the SBMsg.exe that displays the balloon message works. Modify the “AppPath” of the SBMsg.exe registry path to launch anything you want.
    Example: [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Sony Corporation\VAIO Event Service\Settings\VESTransform\Launch\{7273B846-275D-4814-806D-EE0886C54F36}]

    Source: ftp://ftp.vaio-link.com/pub/VAIO/ORIGINAL/
Installation Method: Run Setup.exe located in the \Utilities\Utils Installer HDD Protection Utility folder

[22] Install SmartWi Connection Utility 1.2.0.020706
    File: SOAOTH-00949418-US.exe
    ftp://download.sony.com/US/pc/SOAOTH-00949418-US.EXE
    Source: http://esupport.sony.com for the VGN-SZ330P/B
Purpose: Enables the Built-in VDC EGPRS EDGE Broadband Modem
Additional Information: Turning ON the WWLAN can be easily achieved without having the SmartWi Service Running.
You must execute the ("WWANModuleUtils.exe" /PowerOn) command.
/PowerOn : Turns the modem on and the WiFi off if it's on
/PowerOff : Turns the modem off
/WlanOn : Turns on the WiFi and turns off the modem if on
/WlanOff : Turns off the WiFi
/WwanOnOnly : Turns on the modem BUT leaves the WiFi alone
/WaitDriverLoad : Probably used to hold a startup process until the drivers are loaded during boot?
/Update : No idea what this does (Firmware?)
/Cleanup : DON'T USE THIS! It seems to just delete the utility!

    Main Issue Left:

    1. The Built-in Webcam (VGP-VCC2) does not work. – Can’t find x64 driver

    Small Issues Left:

    1. The DMICall.sys driver does not start – Can’t find x64 driver
    2. The S1-S2 Buttons can only be setup manually to the execute the same program
    3. The brightness function using the Fn keys does not work

Special Thanks for the posts of:

Couldn’t have done it without you guys!

Great post and well laid out.

The newer SZ models use VCC5 & 7. Seems like you found everything but the drivers for the SZ webcam :)

I did install Vista x64 last week and couldn't get the usb ports to pick up any external HDDs to Mem cards. I'll give it another go next week the Intel Chipset drivers.

Has anyone found a 64 bit Vista driver for the “USB\VID_05CA&PID_1830” VCC2?

I'm in the same position of not having that driver too. Have you tried hacking the INF for the VCC3 or 4 to force it since the VCC2 is based off the same Ricoh R5U870 OEM chip so even though they might be slightly different, the core features should still work the same?

I accidentally installed a shared library from Sony and I think it might have been a 32-bit version. Now, my laptop hangs when waking up from sleep mode which happens alot on a laptop that's set to sleep after a few minutes on battery. Unfortunately, Sony's software packages don't have an uninstall feature (how stupid is that). I even asked Sony tech if there was a way to uninstall it but they said I'd have to restore my computer to factory to do that. Thus, I've reloaded Vista 64-bit from scratch again so that I don't have the problem anymore.

Imaging software is your friend here: something like Symantec Ghost or Acronis True Image. I've heard more good things about Acronis but they should both work.

Essentially, once you've got the basic system working how you want with all the fiddling drivers installed and working, just make yourself an image on DVD(s) and you'll be able to put it all back if you need to later, without going through the faff of each individual install. I'll be doing the same when I eventually stop procrastinating and actually buy a new laptop. ;)

I have the same problem than all of you... I'm desesperately looking for a vista x64 driver for the cam (VGP-VCC7) of my VGNSZ61WNC. Did you find any solution?

    Best regards.

    Hi there.

I downloaded the 'un-official' 64-bit ricoh drivers from Sony.com, and modified the inf file to match the 1830 PID. I then replaced the 64kb .sys file with the one from the given 32-bit drivers on the esupport page.

Though the drivers successfully installed, the camera still does not work. All i get is a blank screen. ( so much for the effort ).

I've also downloaded all the available drivers for ricoh cameras, i.e., from vgp-vcc2 to vcc 8, for all OS's. I'll try and replace the .sys files.

    Will keep you posted.

    ------------------------------

Anyways, your guide is truly awesome. Thanks.

Hi, I just wanted to post a trick to get VCC2 to use on 64-Bit Windows 7 (7077) or I suppose an other 64-Bit Windows. First, you have to be dualbooting Windows 64-bit with a 32-bit Windows (I use 32 bit XP). Now, to get it working in 64-Bit Windows, you have to install the VCC3 64-bit Driver available on the Sony 64-bit library, the only one listed on there which is "Ricoh". The device manager should immediately install the vcc3 driver as recognized hardware. Now, your cam isn't going to work in 64-bit windows *UNLESS* first you boot into Windows (32-bit) with a working 32-bit vcc2 driver on there (and make sure your computer is shutdown/off before bootng into 32 bit windows). Open an app once that uses the camera immediately (like Yahoo webcam), when the light is green on the cam then you know its working, and "initialized" now without shutting down, restart the computer, go into windows 64-bit after the restart, and now you can use the vcc2 camera using the 64-bit vcc3 driver! I hope this helps a lot of people.

Can anyone tell me why the vcc3 driver works only after the cam has been initialized in 32-bit windows and not thru a direct power up to 64-bit windows? And with the knowledge of this trick can anyone see that the vcc3 driver is useable with vcc2, just need some modifications on it so the vcc3 driver can be modified to a vcc2 one so if i direct power up to 64-bit windows I can begin to use the cam, without first booting into 32-bit?

It may have sounded confusing but thats the only way I can get the cam working in 64-bit windows 7 (all builds, and I suppose this trick will work with 64-bit XP, Vista too) Thanks. Please update with a modified vcc3 driver or another trick shortcut to get the cam working without the hassle. Thanks.

Anyone figured out how to make brightness keys work? I'm looking to install 4gb of RAM and would like to try out the x64 system to accomodate all of it, but the brightness key issue is discouraging as i tend to use my laptop on the go a lot

Did you figure out a fix for eBry's dual-boot workaround? It's a cumbersome workaround just to "turn-on" the camera if you primarily boot into Windows 7 x64.

Wanted to reply and say that this post was a life saver for me! I installed windows 7 on my vgn-sz330p and everything went off without a hitch - except for the webcam driver of course (which I don't use so it doesn't matter). The brightness function even worked which was great! Thanks for all your hard work on this one guys.

Webcam driver was already there somehow, but it works.
    Brightness Fn Keys:
Install SFEP, Sony Shared Library, and VAIO Event Services, in that order. The drivers are on the first post.

    Everything else works! Thanks!

are you sure the driver is 64 bit? The last 64 bit driver I got still said x86 in the INF. I don't think it was really 64 bit.

    I've got an SZ3VWP/X running Win 7 RTM x64

Most stuff works, aside from the webcam.

My brightness keys show 1 bar on the screen and don't work properly. I've installed all the versions on the original posting. All the other keys work fine. Anyone got them working on a similar machine?

Has anyone got the wireless switch working? I'm using the BT drivers that come with Win 7 and the bluetooth part of the util is missing.

sephirothhoo, I have the same problem in my SZ71. I haven't been able to turn on my WWAN. Smart Network doesn't work with Windows 7 x64.

No. I'm afraid that only 32 bits drivers are availiable for SZ7x. That's is another problem, but some people installed 32 bits drivers with Windows 7 x64 and it works but not for me!.

I know why I was not able to install Sony Smart Network, it was because I didn't install Sony Shared Library. Anyway, I got my Wan work and webcam work under 32bits. I think you can make the Wan work under 64bits but not the webcam. :)

I wanted to post this guide to what I did to get Windows 7 64-bit going on my VAIO SZ360P. I hope someone finds it helpful. Words in CAPS are IMPORTANT!

The FN keys work (including brightness), along with mics and camera (VCC2). I used WINDOWS 7 upgrade disks, upgrading from XP.

    For installation follow this order:

First UPDATE the BIOS (see Sony support website for your computer model http://esupport.sony.com/US/perl/select-system.pl?DIRECTOR=DRIVER)

If you want the camera to work on the SZ360P or similar read on otherwise skip this part,:
the only solution to getting the camera to work that I have read about seems that you have to have a dual boot system with XP (or Linux with r5u870 driver).
You then start the computer on XP (or linux), trigger the camera using Messenger or similar and then RESTART (NOT shutdown) the computer and boot into Windows 7.
The camera then works when needed!
The reason for this is the camera needs some data uploaded into its volatile memory. This is not done by the current win7 driver but is done by XP or Linux. This memory is lost on power off but remains on a warm restart.

Installing a dual boot system is not as difficult as it seems as Win7 has a boot loader that can deal with multi boot OS systems.
To make a dual boot XP/Win7 PC do a system restore (F10 key on startup) or clean install from XP and let it reformat the drive and install
the Sony stuffers. I then went in and uninstalled most of the stuffer programs to save disk space using the control panel.
Then use GPARTED ( http://gparted.sourceforge.net/) to reduce the disk partition occupied by the XP OS. I reduced it to 10 Gb.
Create a third partition in the unused space for Win7. I also created a fourth partition to hold files that might want to move in between systems or similar but this is optional. Do not alter the first partition if you want the system restore option in the future.

In STAMINA mode load the Win7 distrubution (32 bit or 64-bit works similarly). I did a clean install (advanced option).
Make sure the largest partition is selected (as just created above).

Make sure there is a network connection as the Sony SPEC and SPEF drivers and Intel chipset drivers will load automatically.

Next install STAUDIO driver. This is 32/64 bit. http://esupport.sony.com/US/perl/swu-download.pl?mdl=VGNFZ290&upd_id=3225&os_id=29

Install UPEK fingerprint driver (has 32 or 64 bit options in folder). http://www.upek.com/support/downloads/drivers/windows.asp

Install a distribution of the UPEK Protector suite QL software ( https://upek-prod.upek.net/update-s...&driverVersion=1.2.0.189&locale=en-US&uid=14).
This can be gotten from the Sony website under drivers/downloads.

Reboot the system into SPEED mode.

This next part gets the FN keys working with brightness control.

For me, the most critical part was the graphics driver. For the 64-bit system I could only use the beta version of the NVIDIA driver that was found on http://www.vaio-link.com/os/vista/64bit/ .
For this site make sure you put in the computer model otherwise you get an access error.
Click accept to access the files. I downloaded http://dls.update.sony.net/pub/oth/64/EP0000139786.zip. The drivers
from laptopdrivers2go did install and worked really well but I did NOT have brightness control afterwards.

For the camera, download http://dls.update.sony.net/pub/oth/64/EP0000139779.zip. Now go to Computer Management (right click on Computer -> Manage -> Device Manager).
There will be two unknown devices. One is the memory stick reader (did not bother with this as I don't use it).
Check the other by right clicking -> Properties-> details tab and the Hardware Id's. If it has PID_1830 or VID in it then it is the camera. Right click it and then Update driver.
Select Browse computer for driver, then select " Let me pick from list", if you need to choose type, select " imaging device". Then select have disk and Browse to
location where the driver downloaded. If you are asked about driver signing or similar say yes to install it. You are now done for this.

For 32 bit systems go here ftp://ftp.vaio-link.com/PUB/VAIO/ORIGINAL/ and get one of the NVIDIA drivers.
Run the driver installer. If you get an error, go to htp://www.laptopvideo2go.com/ and download an inf file from a 174 version driver. Drop this in the installer folder and then the error should go away.

I did not want all the Sony stuffer programs and so I only installed the following, which is a minimum to get the FN keys working. I let Win7 deal with the battery and power management.

I found the file sources from this very good guide for Vista install: http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=242431 . Please follow the link for the urls. They work for 32 or 64 bit systems. Unzip each.

For each of these installs, right click on only the Setup file then ->Properties -> Compatibility and check off Run this program as compatible for .. Vista and Run as Administrator.then install each. REBOOT between each.
    Follow this order exactly:
    VAIO Event Service 3.3.00.11200
    Reboot
    Sony Utilities DLL 7.1.00.15150
    Reboot
    Sony Shared Library 4.1.00.09190
Reboot and the FN keys should work.

You are now done and the PC should work. You can load the other stuff like HDD protection and Power management if you like.

    Hope it works for you.
    rd

    Hi,

I googled and found this thread. I am not particularly computer savvy.

I have a Sony VGN-SZ330p, and I would like to upgrade to Windows 7 32-bit. The windows7 upgrade advisor seems to think most things are a go.

Does anyone know what additional actions would have to be taken (i.e. drivers that I need to hunt down) after doing a (clean) Windows 7 32-bit install? Are all my current drivers with XP supplanted by drivers that are easily obtained with a Windows Update?

Thanks to anyone who can help

    hello,

I cannot check this registry patch. I gave up on x64 windows 7 on my sz330p and got back to x32 as I like to use camera.

Sony has recently posted some DEVICES_AND_PRINTERS_RICOH_REGISTRY_PATCH_X64_E_090811.ZIP
    on 17th November 2009.
Can somebody who is running x64 Windows 7 check how does this affect camera issues?

(it's easy to find, just sort by "last modified" and it's somewhere on the bottom)

It's not necessary to install dual boot for getting the camera to work. Once installed the vista drivers on w7, it's enough reboot with a liveCD OS, then install webcam drivers properly and test your webcam.
    Then reboot (not shutdown!).
I've made with an ubuntu ultimate edition 1.9 (hardy heron) distro. I've booted with this liveDVD and I've installed and tested the webcam (instructions for installing and testing: http://www.ubuntu-es.org/?q=node/78301). Then I've rebooted (not shutdown) my notebook (vaio VGN-SZ3XP/C). To do this, in terminal, write reboot. Extract DVD distro and reboot with w7. That works!

I've writed a guide for vaio VGN-SZ3XP/C, but in spanish ( http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=444966). Basically it's the same of this post without dual boot installation, only using a liveDVD.

If you mean the SZ460N, then yes. I am running Windows 7 x64 on it right now just fine. The only thing I cannot get running correctly is the webcam and sometimes when I wake the computer from sleep it can't adjust the screen brightness unless I unplug/plugin the power cable.

My man, i would personally like to thank you for posting this link.

after many hours of pulling what few strands of hair i have left out, i found your post.

    anyway heres what i have.

    sony vaio vgn-fz31m (uk model)

    installed windows vista 32bit ultimate

    no webcam

this laptop has the vcc8 ricoh camera.

used your link and point windows to the folder and hey presto it updated, and worked fine in the sony webcam utility.

all other drivers just produced a black screen, and windows update just installed a uxb video device.

    many thanks buddy!!!!!!!!!
