I have a VGNFS550 and just recently it's not recognizing that it's operating on A/C power. Instead, the battery icon appears in the system tray and the orange battery light is lit on the unit. If I unplug the A/C power, the unit completely shuts off and it won't turn on (not even a blip) without the A/C adaptor plugged in. However, if I remove the battery, then it shows running on A/C power only.

I've been on the phone with Sony and they're clueless. I've cleaned the connections, returned the BIOS to default settings, etc etc etc. Can anyone recommend a fix for this issue?

I'm guessing that the battery is shot, and won't hold a charge anymore. When you plug in with just AC and no battery, the machine functions normally - so the AC adapter is probably fine. When you plug in the AC with battery installed, the machine and OS think that the battery is recharging.

Not 100%, just a guess. Only way to tell for sure is to test it with a new battery.. but that's rather expensive, especially if that's not the problem.
