OK - so I have a Sony Vaio VGN-TXN25N with Vista Business. I would like to install either Windows XP or Windows 7 - will this make my computer faster? This is the only reason I would do this - any suggestions would be appreciated.
    Thanks

Vista is the slowest windows ever.
I would say that if you run vista well, 7 should run well and maybe faster.

Have you considered HDD to SSD upgrade ? it would most certainly increase the overall speed of your system.

    Wait for other advices.

How much RAM do you have? If you find that the programs use page files on disk quite often, it would help to boost RAM as well.

The other benefit of XP / Win 7 is that they are more stable. Traditionally, Windows has two parallel tracks: one that focuses on the UI, another on kernel/security etc. issues. The releases alternate, so XP and Win 7 are on the same track, whereas Windows Me / Vista focus more on UI and are less stable. I think that's why Win 7 looks like Vista (they reuse the interface), and that will be why Win 8's interface will change. For some of the history check the bottom of this site: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Microsoft_Windows

Even after Windows Vista had 2 service packs and a lot of performance updates in between, I still see a lot of issues in terms of speed and performance on all the computers that I know that have Vista on them.

I had Vista on my Vaio notebook, and since installing Win7 everything is so much better. If you know how, burn a Win7 iso and try it out.

Please do not go back to Windows XP.

Well - I was told that I if I do install Windows 7, everything would be erased from my computer so when you suggest "trying" it, I am uncertain what you mean. I don't understand what you mean by burn a Win 7 iso and try it out!
