I went to my local store to see if the SZ360P/C model was there. there was a 370 and 381 , but not the model I wanted. When I asked, they suggested to order from the online site.
Why would they not want to (potentially)order a laptop for me?

It might be that as far as the people at the retail SonyStyle store are concerned, it doesn't matter whether you buy it there or online (that is, Sony might not specifically care about the sales generated at a particular store). Otherwise, as you say, they would probably offer to order it for you or something.

Sony doesn't offer all models in the store (for example, the SZ340). Some go to retail channels, others are online ... it's the way it is. I don't sense anything shifty.

FenderP, that is good to know, so that I could continue to shop at that store.
What would be the benefit of them ordering a model versus getting the same one online?

If it's in the store, no real advantage. You don't pay shipping but you still pay tax.

If it's a model not in the store and you want that one, you will have to get it elsewhere. As I said, different things sometimes are available online vs. SonyStyle store vs. the normal retail channel.

The other thing about buying local and in stock is if there's a problem, you don't have to send anything anywhere for return. Just go back to the store.
