Recently bought a 'custom' ordered Vaio laptop from Sony - which came with a 'VGN-Z590' badge.
Paid a ridiculous amount for this from Sony (over $4000) with the thinking that I would buy something Good, Very Fast and enough to last me 3/4 years.

The result: a lemon that runs at about half the speed of my Dell Latitude D620 (which is some 2/3 years old) running on XP/SP3.
    The new LemonVaio specs are:
CPU Intels Core 2 Duo CPU P9500 @2.53GHz
    CPU Clock frequency 2.53GHz
    System Memory 4GBytes
    Cache Memory 6MBytes
Vista Ultimate SP1 (not using the extras)
    8 hour battery....yeah right, 1.5hrs at a stretch...

I know Vista is a crock but surely I should have something faster than a lame snail?? I've removed some unecessary Startup items (most of them are martian to me)...Dont know what else to do. being somewhere between Novice and Intermediate - can anyone give me any tips?   :(

I have the Z90NS (Japanese version of the Z590) with the 9 cell battery and easily get 7 hours (or more) of battery life depending on what I'm doing. Using things like the dedicated GPU, full brightness, DVD or BR, lots of HDD access ... no way you're getting long battery life, but that's true of any laptop, not just Sony.

Outside of the virtualization issue with the Z, it's the best laptop I've owned to date.

if you're getting 1.5 hours on your laptop, there's definitely something wrong with it

call customer service and send it back for repairs

Yeah, don't start removing stuff you admittedly know nothing about and then complain about how slow the machine is. Find out what is slowing it down. First go to the Sysinternals website and get a copy of Process Explorer. Use it to determine what is hogging the CPU and then get back to us.

TheTopRock sorry to hear that your purchase did not live up to your expectations.
    This might help though-
There are some clean install guides for the Z.
This is for the 32bit version. I think that the Z5 models come with with a 32bit operating system.

The battery life seems short. In power saver mode, 50% brightness with wifi on and bluetooth and wwan of you should be able to obtain at least 4-5 hours doing websurfing.

If you're still experencing problems then i suggest that you return your notebook to Sony because it could be be defective.

I think you get a broken laptop. I have z91 (JP version of z590) and it run good. It is slow compare to my desktop that have i7 965 processor but it is fast for small and compact laptop like z.

If you only get 1.5 hrs battery life than 10000000000% something wrong with it.

Thanks very much for your responses and help - much appreciated.
    Some replies...
    - I have attached a copy of the sys report as suggested by Scuderia.
    - Have only deleted startup programs as recommended by PCpitstop.com - their free full scan testing & detailed advice is very helpful for novices, otherwise I would never delete what I dont know.
    - Not a Dell fan although they are good workhorses.
    - Am a major Vaio Fan!! - This is my 3rd Vaio - which is why I was prepared to spend so much extra to get the best...
    - will try with adjusted power settings.
    - Whats with the 'troll' bit?? Is that something unpleasant?
    - Thanks again everyone - its really nice to get help when needed. :)

So what did their free advice tell you to do other than pay $29.95 for their program and of that "adice" aht DID you actually do?

The list you posted is pretty much useless as we can't see any thing about how much of the CPU is being used by the processes.

But let's get to some specifics. Your initial message was very vauge. Exactly how does the slowness you are seeing manifest itself? Give us some specific examples of things. Be as detailed as you can.
