I am surprised that I only received one reply to my post. Let me try again. I am thinking of purchasing the A-290 laptop. I would like to know the following: how quiet is the computer, are there any fan or hard drive noise issues, quality of the screen, reliability, and how useful is the entertainment dock for watching and recording cable TV. Thanks

Well I can tell you about the A270 I got a few days ago along with the 80gig 5400 rpm hard drive. I can barely hear the fan, and this is on its highest setting. I would have to sit in my room and turnoff my desktop and try to listen for it. The hard drive is quiet as well, but makes an occasional clicking noise which does not bother me. The screen was one of the deciding factors to get this laptop. Ohh the hours spent looking at the screen in the stores lol. After using my laptop and then my desktop, it felt like I was running 640x480 resolution on my desktop.

How quiet is the computer...VERY quiet. The occasional click from the HDD, but you have to be listening for it.
Fan noise... silent, only speeds up when you task the processor hard but it is still very silent.
Screen... *Nothing* else can come close, period!
Reliability... it's a Sony. Neither of my VAIOs have ever broken.
How useful is the Dock... Great! You set the computer down and everything is ready to go. Grab the remote and channel surf/record all you want. You even get access to a channel guide webpage that has Record buttons for each program that is listed...

    The VGN-A290 will suit you needs completely(my VGN-A190 is great). [ ;)]
