Hi guys - have decided to purchase an A170 with the AV dock - do not want to purchase the A190 because the specs are restrictive. My question is, if I want to get the AV dock do I have to purchase the whole lot from Sony direct? Sony won't sell the AV dock separately and it seems online stores who sell the A170 don't have specs that include it. Thanks guys.

    Broadside,

I recently purchased the A190 for this exact reason. I treid calling a number of stores and was told that they did not sell with the AV dock. CDW and one other (I can't remember what store) said they could get it, but it worked out cheaper from Sony Direct with the same specs and they had a faster delivery time. In the end I decided against the 2 gig processor anyway as it was cost prohibitive for the performnce gain, so I plumped for the 190 anyway.

thanks Peanutt, only problem with buying from Sony USA direct is I live in Australia and they won't sell outside the US (we don't have the same range available here in Oz). I was hoping to be able to record TV etc hence I wanted the AV dock.

On a similar topic I was looking at the GRT range and some of them include "Giga-pocket" although none seem to be in stock, maybe there are supply problems with Gigapocket? I read elsewhere on this forum that this needs an NTSC signal but we get PAL in Australia so maybe that would be a problem for the AV dock too if I am able to get hold of it somehow.

Broadside, The GRT range is being discontinued so I am sure they will be hard to find anywhere apart from Sony. The Later over teh counter GRT's all came with Giga Pocket software and the TV connections built below the PCMCIA card slot. (and thus reducung the size of the slot from a 2 card slot to a 1 card slot) It did not use a seperate dock like the A series.

I have had the A190 for a week and am over the moon with it and I must admit although the 755 processor would be a bonus, I really don't think it is worth the cost when you look at the difference in benchmarks between the two.
