I have compared both my unit (SZ160) and another in a store (SZ120), the lid is definitely made from a different material. It's lighter, far more rigid and looks CF to me.
So maybe there are different version of the SZ160, but mine , i believe, is definitely made of CF. I'm not going to lose sleep over this

    LMFAO.

I really hope that quote isn't from Sony. Because if it is, they've made another screw up.

I've got the SZ1VP (or atleast I did untill it went back for repair/replacement yesterday), and I can assure you it doesn't have the clear CF lid. It has the black carbon lid.

    Idiots.

whoever started this confusion is lol.
Clear CF Lid most probably 99% japan only cuz thats what the japanese likes to do to their products. If UK gets a clear CF Lid, we oughta get them too in HK.

I can assure you we don't get the clear lid in the UK.

However you judge the people who started this thread, they are consumers (Sony's own staff aren't clear about the product). Having read Sony's descriptions I can understand the confusion. They have mentioned the words premium and carbon in the description of the US/UK premium models. And I can understand why people may associate this with the "premium carbon" finish available in Japan.

Poor marketing by Sony. If your going to have different models, in different regions. Distinguish them clearly in the way you describe them. Considering the product they are selling they should know press releases will reach accross the globe.

Add to this the poorly informed/trained support/sales staff. Who rather then admitting they didn't know the answer, just told customers what they thought was correct. Again if your going to have differences in regional models, a multinational company should ensure their customer facing staff are well briefed as to what their region supplies.

And now in a demonstration of utter incompetence, it appears Sony have made another error in the statement they've released to clarify the situation.

The statement I quoted in my previous post is attributed to Sony. If it is indeed from Sony it shows they have taken the debate seriously enough to attempt to diffuse it by making a company statement. Its not often companies get involved in internet debates.

Yet rather then diffusing the the problem, they have only highlighted the real problem. And the fact they still have no idea as to the true nature of the problem.

    F.A.O: Sony

As a UK owner of a SZ1VP/C, I can assure you it does not have the "untreated"/"natural" CF lid. It has the black carbon lid.

It is precisely these sort of incorrect statements that have led to your customers being so confused as to what they should be recieveing.

The problem is not that your customers have misunderstood your website/staff. The problem is there is no consistency in what Sony tells its customers through press releases/web site/sales staff.

I really envy you Japanese! Now, it makes me want to sell my SZ120 and buy the cool-looking CF Jap version.

Guys, just give it up. You may have an argument if you really know about your argument! First off, you don't have any knowledge about what CF is nor how to test the material. What you end up is just wasting your time to proof something already proven! :p Just in common sense, how can be a cheap material be that light and sturdy?

5to1, they don't have to tell the world that they're selling different products to different regions. However, they should inform their consumers in each regions of what they are selling. Because who cares on earth what's available in other region, they can't get it anyway! Besides, you always have the right to shop around of what's available elsewhere thru a place called the internet! :D

EDIT: Oh ya, don't forget guys who ever bought the SZ160P/C model. You're getting 256mb video card instead of 128mb. So, that's where you spent your additional $500 too NOT only the CF!

What are you talking about? This thread died almost a month ago - but thanks for reviving it with info already (repeatedly) stated, and additional (wrong) information.

Wrong. All of the models have the same video card, a 128 MB Nvidia GeForce GO7400.

Are you kidding me? So, SZ160P/C buyers get the same video card as SZ120P/B buyers?

Yup. However, the screen is MUCH better on the premium models. That, and all the other benefits create the additional value over the regular models, for me at least.
