Hello,
I recently installed Windows 8 on my laptop (Sony Vaio PCG-71211M), and now i would like to update the graphic drivers of the mobility radeon 5000 series graphics card inserted in it.
I tried playing a computer game through Steam, and i got an error message saying i should update my graphics driver to "at least version 12.6 or later", and then got a reference to the AMD website, there i found this
"http://support.amd.com/us/gpudownload/windows/Pages/radeonmob_win7-64.aspx", here it is clearly stated that the Sony Vaio is not compatible with the driver. I then went to the Sony website, but on their site it's impossible to find the model of my Vaio? it's like it does not exist. Any ideas on how i could be able to update my video card drivers? I know my way about computers, although i am by no means a computer wiz.
Thanks in advance.

Sony and other notebook manufacturers usually try to force users to use their supplied drivers, which are usually very outdated.
Does your laptop actually support Windows 8? If not, then you'd probably need to use modified drivers. -
Thank you for your quick response,
I can't imagine that it does, since it was "born" with Windows 7, and is about two years old. Besides i can't find the model on the website, so i'm guessing they no longer support it?
If i need to use modified drivers then so be it, but could you by chance direct me somewhere i might find such drivers? -
Check tweakforce (Xtreme-G 13.1 Win7-8). Install it and let me know if it works.

I installed the "Xtreme-G 13.1 Win7-8", and it installed, looked like usual catalyst center (which i uninstalled before installing the Xtreme one) i can see in the control panel on my PC that it has installed, however i don't really know how and where to actually open the program itself? The windows "search" function can't find either Catalyst or Xtreme, so how do i use it? I'm sorry if this question is a bit .. well stupid.
I'm going to try the 12.2 instead, as it says it's for the mobility series
I installed the 12.2 for the mobility series and when i attempt to open Catalyst i get this error message: "Catalyst Control Center cannot be started. There are currently no settings that can be configured using Catalyst Control Center."
Any ideas? -
The Catalyst Control Center should be under the ATI folder, probably in Program Files (sorry, I can't remember, haven't used an AMD graphics card in a while). The executable should be ccc.exe.
Once you open the control center, you should check the software/hardware info (one of the links on the left side) to make sure the AMD driver is actually installed (probably listed as driver version). Or when installing the driver, click on custom install instead of express, and you can see if it's actually installing the driver. Sometimes installing the AMD driver only installs the control center because the driver itself hasn't been made compatible.
EDIT: Saw your latest message. Did 13.1 actually work properly? Try installing that and do the steps above to verify it's working. -
13.1 did not work, and neither does 12.2. When i open the ccc executable file in the AMD (don't have an ATI folder) folder it says i have incompatible software/hardware, and that i need to contact the manufacturer of my notebook.
I tried running the game, ignoring the warnings, and the game ran fine. I'm at a point where i'm considering just playing, and using the laptop as is for now.
I sincerely appreciate all the help though, thank you very much -
If you want to try modding your own 13.1 drivers (so it will correctly recognize the card), you can try this guide. You can download unmodified 13.1 drivers here (you usually download 13.1 mobility from AMD's website, but they only allow normally compatible cards to be downloaded using their utility).
