I am trying to use an extra monitor at work (in extended desktop mode, not clone mode) so that I can use by the laptop's display and the extra external display.

The external monitor is 24" with native resolution of 1920x1200. It works great when hooked to my desktop or other machines.

When I hook it to the laptop, it becomes fuzzy and slightly blurry. Not horribly, but enough to hurt your eyes and make you not want to use it. Anyone had this problem? I've tried several different cables to eliminate that as an issue, but like i said - it works fine when hooked to my desktop.

    Running digital (HDMI/DVI) or Analog?

Verify the 2nd display in display properties has the matching resolution and if running analog (VGA connector) you may need to press the button on your external display to auto-tune it to the signal. That will hopefully lock in and remove the blur.

Running analog out. Have matched teh resolution to the native resolution of the external monitor. Tried the auto-adjust button on the monitor.. no help.

Also tried using a different external monitor (a smaller 17" one), and it was a little blurry there also.

    I just gave up...

Check out the ClearType Tuner from microsoft. Perhaps the external display is not compatible with your LCD settngs.

So I hooked up the AW to my Dell 2001FP in analog mode and it is not as crisp as the DVI connection but for a secondary display, it looked acceptable. My VGA cable made not be the best either.
