From my understanding Adaptive steps upward when more cpu usage is in demand, but then falls back to the minimum clock once its idle, thus minimizing heat. Performance then stays at the max clock all the time, even when not in use. This will maximize heat.

Wouldn't Adaptive be the better choice is any situation since the cpu will adjust to demand?

There is occasionally a lag in the stepping. I do not have a Sony, but I do use RM Clock which is very similar to this situation. There is sometimes a second lag when it loads up at my lowest setting, then bounces up to full (performance) mode. I have done some simple tests with rendering video in Adobe Premiere and have found the performance setting yields quicker results. Even if a lower step is more than adequate, using 20% of full (performance) mode makes it a bit quicker.
