Hey all, my apologies if this is the wrong place to post this thread however I was wondering if you all think the Sony Vaio Z is durable enough for college use? Putting aside all other factors such as price, etc. do you think it has a durable build and that the screen isn't too flimsy for college use?

What about the screen? Is it easily breakable?

The more flexibe something is the harder it is to break.
A glass screen feel more solid, but will break much sooner.

I agree with everything that's been written here, but for student use I strongly recommend:

    1)

I agree with pretty much everything said here, but for student use I strongly recommend:

    1) A quality skin, such as SGP (available all over eBay) for at least the lid, which is highly susceptible to scratches
    2) Consider a refurbished or lightly used Z2; the performance difference is minimal and I personally think $2,000+ is a lot to pay for a laptop that will inevitably get more banged around than, say, one primarily for office use and transported by car. You can find a lower spec model brand new or barely used for around $1,200 and a higher spec model (6-8GB, 256GB, Core i7) for around $1,500 and you can sell the PMD (all Z2's came with one) for around $300 to one of the many SVZ owners who balked at paying Sony's price but who really want a PMD (poor souls; they don't realize what a hunk of junk itis!)
    3) A Square Trade extended wtty with ADH coverage. Unlike Sony, they honor their wtty and will refund your original purchase price if they can't fix it in 5 business days.

    Anyway, just my 2 cents.

I love my Z, period. But I would like to suggest another laptop. The new Lenovo Carbon would be a great choice as well. Don't get me wrong, the Z is awesome. But from a durability standpoint, keyboard and track pad, the Carbon is an awesome road warrior. (14" 1600x900 IPS screen too)

I know one student who takes excellent care of his laptop and I wouldn't hesitate to have him use the Z2/3. I know another student who's laptop barely survives the abuse given to it. I would not recommend a Z series to the latter student.

The Z2 I have seems very easy to scratch the lid. I have a number of long (but very shallow) scratches from just a few plane trips in the last year. The CF (or perhaps the coating on top) can be damaged pretty easily. Nothing that affects functionality. Happily you can only see the marks when you hold the laptop at a certain angle to the light.

Like many people, I have marks on the palm rest from where the hard rubber lid bumpers press down when closed.

When I travel I always put a micro-fiber cloth in between the keyboard and screen. It's too easy for the screen to flex down onto the keys.

The Z2/3 strikes me as being like a race car -- very fast, very light, but also easily damaged if you use it in a way not intended.

FYI, I'm probably going to sell my Z2 next month. PM me if interested. See my signature for the specifications.
