Note: I solved the problem. The clock and date were set wrong. For some reason Windows checks this before it will trust what is going on.

I have a Sony VPCCW21FX. After factory restore, Windows 7 will not check for updates. I tried manually. It tells me it cannot connect. It's not a network problem here because I can get online. But there is a problem there too. IE does not accept certificates on web. I can't even visit Microsoft or Sony without it balking. And it does this so much it makes it impractical to use the web.

I got no error messages during the factory restore, and all the software that came with the computer is there. In other words, in every other way it looks like a clean factory restore.

I am posting this from a different computer.
