What should I install/use to play my DVDs?

There are many, try PowerDVD, InterVideo DVD. Tons of players. If you need a link to download there full versions let me know, HP has all of them in there drivers and support free to download.

I use VideoLan. It is free and plays most anything.

hey man thanks for the help. Could you throw me a link where I can get powerDVD free?
-
and the quality is decent? -
the quality is just as good as powerdvd/windvd if you ask me,
you can always use filters to increase contrast and such in vlc.
free in this case means opensource, the quality of the program
is not less because of it
furthermore, you can use vlc to watch almost any movie format,
without having to install codecs. -
If you made recovery discs you should have a copy of WinDVD. Just insert disc one and it should launch a program that allows you to install apps and drivers. WinDVD should be one of the installable apps.

thats what I ended up doing. i couldnt find it at first. -
so do you or dont you need a link to PowerDVD?
also VLC is great -
Hi,
I just realized I also have a problem playing DVD's after doing the semi-clean install. I get this error message using WinDVD:
"Create overlay failed. Please lower your screen resolution or color depth and try again."
I already tried reinstalling WinDVD with my recovery DVD's, but that did not fix the problem. I also tried playing DVD's with Windows Media Player and that does not work either. Only plays sound, no video. I am going to try installing PowerDVD to see if that helps. Could aerOsense post the link to the PowerDVD free link? Has anyone else had this problem after doing a semi-clean install? -
Update: I installed the trial copy of PowerDVD and now I can play my DVD's fine. But does anyone know why it won't work with WinDVD or Windows Media Player? I was reading some old posts where people were having the same problem with NetMeeting installed, but I don't even have that. Other people where having problems with DirectX and WinDVD not being in sync for the overlay to work. I've tried most of the quick fixes that were on these forums but nothing worked except PowerDVD. Here is one thread from InterActual support:

Any comments on this problem? -
Rightclick Desktop > NVIDIA Display > Laptop Display >
Video Overlay Settings > Uncheck "Enable VMR" > APPLY -
But under Video control Settings , it says "Overlay is disabled, no controls available." Am I looking in the correct place? -

Wow, I found the fix to correct this problem on this forum:

I updated my NVidia driver to version 84.25 (March 17, 2006) and now everything is working great! If anyone else who did a semi-restore on the FE590 is having this problem playing DVD's, you should try applying this video driver update in the link above. Thanks for everybodies help here. -

Sorry for lack of response. I wasn't in town.
I've been on 84.25 for a while. It rocks. Congrats anyways.
