the price difference is $1200! but with a HP i get:

    1. 17' screen
    2. 512MB dedicated vram
    3. remote control
    4. quick play
    5. excellent customer care
    6. Altec Lansing speakers

all of which i dont in Sony!

Sony is Made in Japan and thus better quality hopefully, a mindblowing carbon finish, much better form factor/weight etc.

but is it worth $1200 more?!

I know someone will say these are different notebooks but then i want to compare them functionally not bracketing them in a genre.

thanks a lot for your advice

it's an apple and orange situation; a comparison between similar models (sony SZ vs. fujitsu S, for example) makes more sense.

I think all the answers you are going to get here will be people telling you you must decide what size you want.
13.3 and 17 is a big difference, it depends on what you're going to use the laptop for really.

I believe there are those here who believe in mobility on a bigger scale than room to room, me included. But if that is all you need it for then you might as well have more screen space. It's simple to me. Go for the HP; might as well have it all. I have a bit of both worlds; 17" Powerbook and 10.6" screen Sony T250. Which do I use more; the T250 using my Sprint A900 phone as a USB connected or bluetooth phone-as-modem deal; I can get on the internet practically anywhere. I use FM-7 software and connect the laptop via USB to my keyboard to get totally cool DX7 sounds "live" from the laptop when playing with my musician friends away from home. I can goof off on the net at my job. There is so much mobility has to offer that I could not see having only a large desktop replacement.

But everyone has different priorities and you have yours. Hope you enjoy your choice as much as I have mine. If I was in your shoes with your needs it would be the HP for sure.

If these are the buying parameters... why would you go for the light and sexy portable that is the Sony?... If the laptop can plant roots, "ultraportable" doesn't seem like the right category. :)

because functionally both do the same stuff for me..including planting roots and removing pests! and because $1200 seems a lot to pay for sexiness!

Depend on what do you mean by "made in Japan" or "made in China". I think what you meant was "assembled in Japan" because I don't believe there is one single computer on the market that do not have components made in China.

Yesh ---- I also avoid HPs.. although maybe for no good reason anymore (had an HP desktop back in the day, found out about proprietary motherboards, much anger ensued).

Sony sexiness does carry a lot of weight in my book. ;)
