FW running smoothly here but I am wondering if anyone had unstinalled the original ATI driver and have replaced it with any alternatives like Xtreme-G Mobile ATI drivers from Tweaksrus.com? If so, what are the uninstall procedures and do you need to uninstall ATI Control Center as well? Also, what are the install procedures for ATI video drivers under Vista and thanks.

You should uninstall everything from ATI first, including CCC. Then you can use the latest Catalyst (8.8 I think) and "mobility modder" to alter the ATI drivers. Or, I guess there are pre-made drivers out there from sites like the one you mentioned.

What's the benefit of modified/hacked drivers and where can you find them for the ATI Mobility Radeon 3470, specifically for 64-bit Vista?
-
you dont need to uninstall anything, download the new catalyst 8.8 desktop drivers, and then go to mobility modder webpage, it gives you very simply instructions on how to do it.
I installed right on top of my old drivers just fine, even got a slightly 3dmark06 score boost...
I have the 3470 as well, FYI -
I'd appreciate if someone could explain what happened below, this is my first ever experience with an ATI GPU and the Catalyst control panel so it's all a bit confusing...
To begin with, I downloaded the regular ATI Catalyst 8.9 package and installed it over the existing one, but when I in the Catalyst window checked the "driver package version" (I suppose this is the Catalyst version?) the version stated there was the same as before (8.4.xxxx).
So, I decided to uninstall all ATI components and then do a clean install of the ATI Catalyst 8.9 package. After I ran the setup, I was prompted to reboot Windows as usual (no message saying that installation failed for this or that reason), then on restart there was no trace of any Catalyst utility anywhere and suddenly Windows Update started downloading an old ATI display driver from June 2008.
Now, I have my hunch that Catalyst 8.9 refuses to install on the Sony FW and that this is the exact (and only?) reason why people install the Mobility Modder so that they can use the latest Catalyst version. But before embarking on (un)installing any else related to ATI I'd appreciate if someone could confirm whether this is the case or not. -
How can you even install the package without Mobility Modder? If you have been using Mobility Modder, I don't think the new 8.9 version is supported yet (I am not sure, especially since I don't know how it works). I mean version 8.9 was released just a few days ago.
-
So I take it, just to be completely clear, that in order to install any newer version of the Catalyst package (newer as in newer than the version available from Sony) directly from ATI's webpage you have to use Mobility Modder, otherwise it will refuse to install?
-
And I just tested 8.9 using Mobility Modder and it installed without a hitch, so there shouldn't be any problems. Attached a screenshot...Attached Files:

Thanks for the clarification, I went through the Mobility Modder procedure and I now have the Catalyst 8.9 version, same version numbers as in your pic

wait... 8.9!?! Didn't 8.8 JUST come out...i updated my driver via mobility modder and 8.8 like a week ago... so i guess 8.9 just came out? Anything special about it?

ATI updates their driver very often, like once a month.
