Am I expecting too much from Sony's screens?

    Hi,

I have two 15.4" vaios which have the standard X-brite(ECO) screens, both of which have some white light bleeding from the bottom of the lcd. In general use it isn't noticable, but does become noticable on black-screen startup (not a big deal), or when viewing movies with black bars top and bottom. It's also slightly noticeable when working on images which have a large amount of black in them. I'm happy with these laptops, as they were both fairly cheap, and the sharpness, brightness and colour on the screens is generally ok.

I decided to buy a new 18.4" vaio AW, and went for the higher spec dual-lamp screen (higher than the ECO, but lower than the premium Adobe RGB screen). Whilst the screen is brighter and super sharp, it leaks white light at the bottom of the panel. In fact, I would say that the white light is actually stronger and more concentrated than on the 15.4" ECO screens. I imagine that this is simply a result of having two lamps, but expected it to be better than this as I am paying a premium for the so-called improvement.

Am I expecting too much to have something approaching black on my vaio? Is there any way of doing a comparative test? Any advice/experience would be appreciated, particularly from large screen users/FW users.

    Cheers,

    Snarff.

Many if not all laptop displays suffer a certain amount of light bleed, whether CCFL (single/dual lamp) or LED. I would guess that the reason desktop displays don't have as pronounced a problem is that they have more room to play with the placements of the backlights. And of course the higher quality desktop displays use better technology in their panels (IPS etc).

Sorry if that doesn't help, but I don't think it's unusual to have some backlight bleed.

On your new AW, is the light bleed only visible on a black screen?

Maybe you should post some pictures so you can compare it with other people. If it's bad it makes sense to return it.

    Hello,

I have a FW11M (ECO screen) and I could have written your first paragraph word for word. Fair to good for internet and mail, a bit below average for multimedia. That white halo at the bottom can even be perceived with regular text (more contrast at the top).
I had a dual lamp screen before (Vaio FE21M), the colours were more vibrant, the screen brighter, and the vertical viewing angles much better (no ugly negative effect from below for films and pictures, just a darkened image).
What you say about the AW is disappointing, especially considering the price tag  .

    Regards

Perhaps i am not as sensitive to it, but when i watch dvd's/streaming hd video/itunes movies and shows, i havent noticed the screen bleed on my Eco LED SR.... not sure if its cause its an LED screen or im just not perceptive to the screen bleed....

When I brought my FE790 two years ago, I already know Vaio has more backlight leaks. However, I also realized that its screen is at least twice as bright as most other laptops. My current new AW-190JAH from newegg has similar backlight leaks (only notice when it is full black background), but I guess I have expected the leak, so it is not much of a bother. Overall a good screen in my book (I have looked all over bestbuy, fry's, sonstyle, etcs to look at screens before I brought the AW).
