You Sony FW owners out there, what games have you test? How did they perform?

I'm reading everyone talking crap about the HD 3470 inside the FW, but its not like its a horrible card. It may not be the best, but I think its fine for the casual gamer.

I play WOW, what kind of performance should I expect with this laptop? I read that WOW is more RAM intensive than graphic intensive and I think this card should be more than fine for that.

    Thanks all.

the SR w/3470 got 85 fps for CSS on high settings w/o AA @ 1280x800

I'm pretty sure games like WOW will run just fine.

EDIT: yeah it is kind of memory intensive (1024MB recommended)
again, shouldn't be a problem for the FW

How about newer games such as Call of Duty 4, Gears of War, Bioshock, Unreal Tournament 3, C&C3 to name a few? How do they perform on the FW?

I think these questions are answered in the comments of the Sony Vaio FW review in the news section. You may want to look there.

I know it was mentioned multiple times that 3D performance is lacking but I'm looking for stats, actual numbers, quantitative data, not just qualitative (and I'm not talking about 3dmark scores, I mean real life performance)

I mean you say the laptop is not meant for gaming but then in the Mobile Graphics Card Guide, the 3470 is listed as a mid-range videocard and I quote, "Mid-range video cards have enough power to play the latest games at comfortable and enjoyable settings."

So, which is it? This is why I was asking for quantitative data, average fps for popular games such as CoD, UT, GoW, etc.

By the way, forgot to mention that this laptop will not only replace my 5-year old Toshiba A20 but my 3-year old "gaming" PC as well, which currently has a BFG nVidia 6600GT w/ 128 vRAM.

It hasn't really been out long enough for anyone to try out anything.

It would also be helpful if you didn't use acronyms for whatever games you are speaking about. I probably won't play them but I will be playing the things I enjoy and provide some feedback once I do.

Like I said before there is discussion in the FW review about how the FW handles games.

Q; What games have you tried?

    http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=278888&page=6

True it's not meant for serious gaming, but it will play many games just fine.

As long as porno runs at 30+ FPS on average I am okay. It can be very demanding at times!

Go to the gaming forum and ask in the "can my notebook run it thread" sticky.. It should be better in shader intensive games than your 6600 GT, it could even outperform a 6800 GT at lower resolutions ie. 1280 x 800.

    WOW: Max
Call of Duty 4: Low -Medium
Gears of War: Low - Medium
    Bioshock: Medium - High
    Unreal Tournament 3: medium
    C&C3: Depends on the processor

I know the 6600GT is absolutely rubbish now. All those games I mentioned, I can only play on low at 800x600 and 2x AA (to smooth out some of the jagged edges) and this is on a 24" monitor with a 1920x1200 resolution. Only the classic Unreal Tournament 2004 works at full detail and 1920x1200...and it's borderline.

If I could play the games at 1280x800, that would be amazing but again, on a small screen, I would honestly not mind the 800x600 resolution with higher details rather than higher resolution and lower details, especially since the 3470 has 256 mb vRAM while my 6600GT has only 128 mb.

    --------------------------

PhilFlow, I know I read the discussion there and zarj only mentioned that this games ran "silky smooth" at "default settings". What does silky smooth mean, 60 FPS? 40 FPS? 30 FPS?

Another problem is that most of the games he tested are not very graphically-intensive and are more CPU-based. The games I listed are fast-paced shooters (except for C&C3), which is why I was asking again. :)

You shouldn't have to go any lower than 1024 x 768 for those games, but you'll have to play around with the settings yourself. The 256mb of ram won't effect performance a whole lot, it probably won't even come into play unless you have a GDDR3 version of the card as the 3470 has a 64 bit bus.

And that's one of the problems. The 6600GT has GDDR3 and 3470 comes in both DDR2 and GDDR3 versions. Maybe someone who has the FW laptop can shed some light on what type of memory the video card uses.

Either way, some games benefit from 256 mb of vRAM. Games such as Assassin's Creed, Mass Effect, and Lost Planet require at least 256 mb of vRAM, I believe.

Here's a post from a dutch forum about HD3470 FW game performance:

"ik kan er goed op gamen. cod 2 kan alles op zijn hoogste.. cod 4 kunne de meeste dingen ook op hoog staan. C&C kan's wrath trekt die ook met geen moeite. wel fijn dat deze laptop niet heet word van het gamen :) "

Translation: I can game well on it. COD2 everything at highest settings. COD4 can have most things on high settings. C&C kan's wrath without effort. It's nice that this laptop does not get hot while gaming :).

Oh, that's very good news and I'm glad to hear about such great performance. Do you have the link to it (if only I knew dutch)? I hope they didn't confuse the 3650 with the 3470.

Definitely not with this graphics card. What you is a HD3870 or a 9800M GT to get some decent frame rates with Crysis. ;)
With this notebook, you wouldn't even be able to play on low settings. It would be just too much for the system to handle.

    3450 with a decent core 2:
Low settings with shaders on medium at 1024 x 768 res DX9: 25+ maybe 30+ frames

Not a hope in hell it will play it on medium settings... even at 640 x 480!

I give Dota the official Bardia Stamp of Approval (TM)!

It was very noticably better than the X4500 that I just returned. Even plays at 900X1600. Just to smooth things up a bit more (and because Dota honestly doesn't need super high res) I lowered the res to 675X1200, and ran really well, even with mass battles.

I'm very pleased. I was terribly disappointed when my X4500 laptop (that I returned) couldn't even manage Dota decently. I figured after 6-7 years...
