    Hi Everyone,

When I had an Acer laptop it came with eData Security which allowed me to encrypt data, files etc.

Does anyone know if Sony has any encryption software?

I bought a Sony VGN-FW11E laptop, delivered yesterday and am looking for a simple easy trustworthy program to encrypt my files. I am worried to use anything incase it not trustworthy.

I can't find anything on the laptop to encrypt files etc.

I want something that allows me to rightclick the file and choose encrypt/decrypt, as simple as that

    Thank you
    CG

Some of the free stuff is pretty good, certainly if you don't need military crypto strength or anything... ;)

Even 7-zip (great free compression utility) has a useful encrypt/decrypt functionality.

There there's the purpose built stuff like PGP or whatever it's called nowadays.

If your FW has a fingerprint reader, it will almost certainly have software to encrypt files and decrypt them using your fingerprints instead of a password.

Do you have TPM on your FW? you may need to look at the spec to find it out unless you have a fingerprint scanner like InfyMcGirk pointed out.

If you do then get the software for it so that it creates a personal secure drive i.e. Drive X on your computer which can only be accessed by you and not by others even if the rip your HDD out and put it into a caddy/other form of reader.

It is almost military grade encryption.

I will get the name of the software when I get home, check first.

Depending on your needs you can use either AxCrypt or TrueCrypt. Both utilities are free and open-source...

    Thanks for your replys.

So you know it got the Sony VGN-FW11E Model.

    No Fingerprint Reader built in.

    Thank you,
    CG

    UPDATE:

Tried AxCrypt and perfect for what i want it for. Light, simple and does exactly what it says in the description, Perfect. :)

I was just going to say that.

I used TrueCrypt to encrypt an entire flash drive that contains source code to every program I've ever worked on. It's pretty easy to use and provides good security.
