    Hi,

I'm trying to decide between getting a Sony Vaio TX series laptop, or a Dell 710m. Because of the much lower price of the Dell (34% off right now) it's really a tough decision.

If anyone owns a TX, could you please share some input on how you feel about your laptop? Pros? Cons? Observations? etc... Anything that might help me decide which one to get?

    Thanks very much.

They really are not comparable. The TX is much smaller and almost 1.5 lbs lighter. The 710m is closer to the SZ series (4.1 lbs) although the premium SZ's are about half a pound lighter.
In comparison to the SZ's, the dell is quite weak.
but then, you are paying almost half the price...

Well, the TX is smaller, but not by much:

    Sony TX670 10.7 x 7.7 x 1.12 / 2.76 lbs.
    Dell 710m 11.7 x 8.5 x 1.5 / 4.1 lbs.

You're right about the weight, though...

Beware!!! The TX is dangerously addictive. While I was waiting for my SZ160, I got got my hands on a TX at the local Fry's and almost bought one. It is uber-slim, sleek, sexy, and oh-so-lightweight. Very good keyboard (and I hate small keyboards), the touchpad has a great feel to it, and it has one of the best screens I have ever seen on a laptop (which you can use to watch DVD's without booting Windows!). It's got every bell and whistle you could want on a laptop, except for a dedicated graphics card, which I'm sure would not be a big deal on this type of computer. Having said all that, the Dell is HALF the price, so my advice is this - IF you can afford it, go for the TX. You definitely will not be sorry.

Check out www.siliconpopculture.com/sonytr, there's a forum there with TX users and some have complained about its fan noise and heat issues.
I tried one out at CompUSA and was quite impressed with it, but was worried about the durability of the screen.

Trust me, it's much smaller. You have to see them side by side...

    I would LOVE to!

Do you know where I can find a side-by-side picture of these two laptops? (Vaio TX and Dell 710m)

    Anyone??

I posted some side by sides of the two a few months back over at siliconpopculture (TR world). I sold the 700 and kept the TX. I use the TX mainly for presentations and some statistical number crunching, video editing (light) and photo editing (light). It has been a work horse for me. I am not a gamer, nor would I recommend it for such. Overall, they may look similar on paper, but truly do not even compare (money aside, of course). I am quite happy with my TX. Dell quality on the 700 is better than normal (made by Samsung, if I remember correctly), but nowhere near the TX. It is slower, perhaps, but the two are from different worlds. One an executive the other a rank and file machine. The 710 still used older motherboards with antiquated intel graphics (845?) whereas the TX is relatively better with the 900? integrated (still crappy) graphics. Battery life on the 700 with standard battery is terrible (a touch over an hour) and the extended battery, although cheap, is big and adds almost another pound to the machine. The TX battery is stellar with the standard battery (4-5 hours). They all (TX) come with the LED screens, which I think are much better the the thicker florescent types...but with some bleeding...still acceptable given the better overall picture, viewing angle, which is horrible on the 700, and ghosting, which is bad on the 700). The TX is carbon fiber verses aluminum with white paint (looks cheap). I can go on, but the TX is amazing...albeit a bit more expensive. The fan noise is not as bad as people say. On battery it is hardly noticable. Plugged in is a different story, but not too bad. Fanless would increase head and wear the machine out, but a better fan would be nice also. One final thing to keep in mind is resale value on subs, particularly sony subnotebooks, is very good due to slower upgrade cycle...see 1.2 ghz processor just now getting bumped to 1.3 after a year or more). The resale on a 700 (speaking from personal experience) is not very good. Just my 3 cents.

Thanks very much for the info. If not for the huge price difference, I would already own the TX. But Dell keeps tempting me with price, due to discounts -- 34% off from Dell, plus 12% & an extra 5% through my company discount. It's a tough choice.

Any idea what the exact URL is where you posted the side-by-side pictures? I searched on siliconpopculture, but couldn't find them.

    Thanks again...

I have a TX and love the little bastard. The screen is amazing! keyboard feels great, i love it actually.

The fan is not noisy, the only time I can actually hear it is when i come on these forums and read about people complaining about it.

Its a great laptop, looks wicked. But if you cant afford it, you can't If you can, I would get it over the dell any day.

Ever have a problem reading small text with this screen? An 11.1" screen with higher than normal resolution has gotta have some teeny-tiny text. True?

It's not about affording it (I can). It's about being able to justify spending more than double the amount of the Dell.

By the way, this will be a second laptop for me. I already have a "desktop replacement" as my primary laptop. Now I want a little one that I can take "on the go."

I had the T250 before this, and the 10 inch was too small. 11.1 inch is perfect IMO, it makes a huge difference between the 10 inch on the T.

I don't find it too small. I was using it for a about a month solid as a desktop and loved it. Had the dual monitor hooked up aswell.

You will love the sony. Extremely nice unit.
