This is actually a follow up from a previous problem thread but more to the point. I'm wondering, is there no way to Enable/Disable Bluetooth other than Via the Sony Wireless Switch Utilities (Switcher.exe) or the SmartWi Utility?

I prefer to let Windows handle my Wireless...or just disable Bluetooth via the Bluetooth Manager (Toshiba).

I've uninstalled the Sony Wireless Utility now but my Bluetooth is constantly on now and I can't seem to find a way to disable it.

    (Using an SZ680 btw)

You could have left the Sony Wireless utility installed but just stopped it running at startup. This way you could fire it up manually if you want to switch bluetooth on or off.

That would be handy if the laptop didn't boot up with Bluetooth already On. Also, I couldn't seem to find the Sony Wireless Switch Utility under Start up services (neither with msconfig nor services.msc)..maybe I overlooked it or maybe the Vaio Event Service fires it up so disabling that would also disable function keys...

Trying via the SmartWi Utility now though but that too doesn't seem to work too well..

    There is no bluetooth switch.

Anyways I think I've come with the best solution until a better one is found. Install the SmartWi utility (not the other one). And just disable Bluetooth with that. This one does not seem to disconnect/reconnect your WiFi like the other utility does.

Better solutions or alternatives are still welcome.

(if Bluetooth on Startup was able to be disabled in the BIOS then that would also make things easier, just disable all Sony Wireless Utils at Vista start-up)

the wireless switch controls both -- so if you leave it off, then you won't have either wireless or bluetooth -- and as soon as you flip it, both will be on.

My way of disabling bluetooth was to go into device manager and manually disable the device, if you disable the bottom-most one, it disables the rest.

A very crude way of doing it, but at least i don't have to deal with the sony wireless utility issues

-- where do you get sony smartwi from?

It's under administrative tools on cpanel and task scheduler you'll find a Sony folder and the switch utility start up when a user logged in, just disable this task and switcher.exe won't start

    I found the real solution:

    http://aps.toshiba-tro.de/bluetooth/pages/download.php

If you install the updated driver, there is a new option on the bluetooth tray icon that lets you disable bluetooth

does not require any sony applications -- just the toshiba driver

would recommend uninstalling your current stack and rebooting before installing the updated drivers

Hello, I installed the latest version stack following the link given and have the following to report:
    1. it installed as a 30 day trial version
    2. while it does enable /disable blutooth radio, the light does not go off and I presume that the battery longevity would still be affected.
What is the point of this? Am I missing something?

i have it shut off so that when i flip the switch only the wireless comes on

but if you keep the switch on, when you boot up the bluetooth will be on till it shuts off on its own.

I had similar issue. On my TXN15, every time I turned ON the WWAN/Lan/Bluetooth switch, WWAN was opening. It took long time to close WWAN, Lan and start BT. I don't have contract with Sprint and I don't want start 30 day trial. Nothing helped. First I uninstalled switching utility, but then I couldn't get bluetooth to start. Problem was I had bluetooth off when I exited switching utility. I installed it back. Turned on bluetooth and uninstall again. Now I learned I couldn't get bluetooth headset to connect to my laptop. TXN doesn't support it. My previous TX770 did.
I downloaded new Toshiba BT stack. Everything was working fine. Now I found out is 30 day trial. I uninstall bluetooth and install again from recovery partition. Somehow audio part of it stayed on my laptop. It is working the way I like it. If I boot up my laptop with the switch in ON position BT and Lan lights are on, but only Lan is working. If I choose to start BT I have to start it using shortcut made from Control Panel. And I don't have to worry about WWAN anymore.

Switch to a WIDCOMM stack and you won't have to deal with the 30 day evaluation and you'll have a better driver set. the link in my sig has more details.
