Any thoughts on the new FE690 w/GO7600 ?

my FE should have arrived today, but they sent it to essex and i live in yorkshire. bit of a joke really, anyway should have it by tomoz.

 

I got my FE690 yesterday and i have not had alot of time to play with it yet but i did try some features out.

First of all its well built, they keyboard is sturdy and the touchpad is very responsive. The screen is beautiful as always and the built in webcame is so clear it really is impressive.

I like the sound, it may not be the best but its pretty good, and there was not alot of sony junk installed, only thing i removed right away was AOL explorer, nothing else has caused any problems.

I tried playing Halflife 2 and it worked really well, sorry i cant quote the setting off the top of my head (at work) but it was beautiful and smooth, i even did the Lost Coast level without any trouble at all.

Also if you get this computer the first thing you should do is go to the vaio support icon, click recover lost files, and burn yourself 2 backup DVD's or like 7 CD's. The Vaio DOES NOT come with any backup software, the only things in the box were the Vaio, powercord, warranty, manual, and liscense for some of the microsoft programs.

just recieved my FE today, mines the 21B the lowest model, heres my thoughts.

Its really well built, the case is strong and does not flex at all. it looks so sleek its unbelievable. sony uk do tend to put a lot of extras on but it was no problem deleting the lot. i havent played any games yet but it pi to 2m in 1.24 and its only got the T2300. the screen is absolutely beutiful i thought i would have problems with the glare and reflection but i can happily say there is no problem.

really happy so far will let you know how it goes.

Just kinda curious, Have either of you measured how thick it is? Is it closer to 1" or 1.3"? Thanks!

 

1 inch and the front and about 1.5 at the back. hope this helps

@Jhirsc76, Im really interested to know about heat from the laptop. Do you have the go7600? Does it generate alot of heat? also, what speed is the HDD? If its 4200, do you notice if its slow?

@ashok2429, How are you finding the screen? The FE21B does not have dual lamps - does it significantly affect the brightness/contrast?

 

well not having seen a dual lamp screen i couldnt make the comparison but to me the screen is fantastic, really vibrant and very bright (too bright on the top setting)

ive been using this laptop even more and i am loving it more and more, the dual cores are amazing.

ashok, do you have a larger battery, or does it just naturally get bigger in the back? I am glad to hear good things about this model. It looks like a great computer. I may just have to get one. Thanks again!

 

i have the normal battery, its naturally wedge shaped the screen remains the same thickness but the bottom half gets gradually bigger. loving it more and more.

 

hmm,this sounds tempting... i may get another sony. this will be my dtr, heh. with how i configured mine, not a bad price - $1549.99

besides the graphics card and size (uh duh) how does this differ from the SZ? (performance/build/screen/battery life)

 

performance - better for games as the SZ has the go7400 whereas the FE has the go7600. Theres hardly any noticeable difference between the core duo's so performance wise they should feel fast and responsive.

build - both are made by sony so they should be equal. I think the SZ has HDD protection incase you drop seeing as hows its ultraportable and all.

screen - normal SZ has the x-black screen, premium sz has the x-black ith LED (thinner and brighter screen thats very power efficient) whereas the FE has x-black with double lamp giving a brighter and sharper picture.

battery life -the SZ i hear can go to 6 hrs but thats because you can disable dedicated graphics thats mooching off the batery. The FE doesnt have that option but if i had to gues i'd say about 3-3.5 hrs.

How are you guys finding the keyboard, especially the tiny (narrow) mouse buttons? I found them difficult to use at first. Any opinions?

Seems like it's hard to get the scores for the FE with the 7600...I can tell you that with the same GPU in an AR I got 3279 on 1st run and 3302 on the second..(3Dmark05). The rest of the specs for my machine are in my signature. The score should be very similar with the FE.

 

I saw this FE model on Sonystyle and it has a 160 GB 5400 rpm drive. The only 160 drives I have sen are the 4200 prms which are slower. Can anyone confirm these are indeed 5400 rpm drives? If so, this model seems to have everything I want except possibly the exteneded battery which I have not decided on yet. Thanks.

hi guys, new to this site. i ordered my sony fe690 on july 27th, its shipped, and expecting it to arrive on monday, they haven't shipped the warranty yet. cannot wait to get it. how has your experience with the fe690? is the geforce go7600 good for videos?
