I'm just throwing this out there in case there are any programmers who could help out.

I own a Vaio F12 and the brightness of the power light is really too high. As we can see from the battery becoming low and going into standby, the light is able to be dimmed and even change colour.

Is anyone out there skilled enough to write a program that let's the user control the state of the power light?

It would be nice to dim or or even turn it off.

    Many thanks.

You are not the first one I hear complaining about it, but I seriously can't understand how it could bother you.... do you sleep with your laptop in bed? Just wondering...

It doesn't bother me at all - I love it the way it is.

I post this question once before and I thought it would help save the battery, but no it doesnt. Yes it is bright.

Now with my new model YB, not only it is bright on the side ring, it has this bright long strip at the surface now.

I would expect that the power light is somehow hardcode-connected with ACPI states like almost every computer is, thus cannot be controlled just with a piece of software. You perhaps need to mod BIOS or hardware, and that kind of stuff is simply not worth the effort IMO. If you're bothered by the light, just

    - cut the pcb wires going to the led
    - replace the led's series resistors to 'hard-wire'-dim it
    - stick a piece of tape over it.

Had my Z which also had the light and I put it to sleep for 3 hours. Battery was still 100% when I opened it again. Given that the light is on for roughly 50% of the time let say it operated for 1.5 hours. Given that it doesn't even consume 1% of battery for an hour and a half of time on, there isn't a reason to disable the light really.

Does the Z still drain battery when its turn off?

Then the bright ring run less power than the drain. Thats funny.

Obviously there's no drain issue when it's plugged in.

Ironically, yes. If you power off the thing it will drain itself off suddenly. Sleeping the machine for 3 hours saves more power than shutting down the machine for 3 hours.

I read it from somewhere (I think it was sony europe or UK) that "your VAIO battery will drain by 8% overnight". That's quite true for my Z actually. Usually its at 100% before I sleep and when I wake up and use it again (whether if it is 6 or 10 hours later), the battery will be at 93 or 92%. Of course, when kept unused for a prolonged period of time, more battery drain will be evident, but for about a day of use that's quite true. I've read scary accounts of 70% battery drain overnight though.

I can watch 10-15% of my battery during simply from powering off, taking it somewhere else and powering back on 30 minutes later. But... when it's powered back on, the remaining charge last considerably longer.

Glad you like it and surprised at your confusion.

Lots of people live in one room apartments. Here in the United States, they're called "studio apartments." In that case, the laptop may be close enough to the bed for the light to be annoying.

I have a TT which seems to have the same power light as the F. When I have my TT with me on a business trip and am staying in a hotel room, I cannot leave the computer on overnight because the green light is so bright, it disturbs me when I am trying to sleep.

By the way, I would say the light from the TT is much brighter than the LED display on my Sony clock radio, DVD, VCR and other items.

seriously, why don't you just cover it with a piece of black tape? (or power the notebook down at night)
