Hi. I recently bought a SZ120 after having used only Dells, Macs and Thinkpads previously. I have found this forum extremely useful, so thank you all! I have a question regarding the Fn controls (ie., Fn + F4 for volume up, Fn + F5 for brightness down, etc.). It bugs me that there is a beep every time I use the Fn controls. It is especially loud and annoying if I use the Fn controls while the volume is high (say, if I'm watching a DVD or listening to music). Is there any way to turn off the beeping when using Fn controls? (Muting is not really a solution because I often use Fn+F3 or Fn+F4 while listening to music or watching DVDs).

Would be very thankful if someone has an answer.

I couldn't find anything in the Sony Vaio Control Center utility, so if there is a way to switch off the beeping sound its undocumented ;)

Go to Control Panel -> Add/Remove Programs. Find "VAIO Event Service" and click Change/Remove. Once the installer pops up, choose to Modify (NOT remove!) the package. When the list of components appears, uncheck the Sound checkbox and proceed through the installation.

That should remove the sound effects.

(Note: Another poster here mentioned this first, but I can't remember his or her name. Sorry.)

Thanks, "Liar"! It worked like a charm. This forum is so much more helpful than Sony support, which could give me no answers.

Sony support? Pfft. That's an oxymoron.

    And glad it helped :)

Now THAT'S a weird way to enable or disable sounds. They should have simply added a sound event to Windows' sound manager, then users could customize or disable it...

I've got an update for this thread because I wasn't able to get this unconscionably shrill beep turned off using the above method in Vista. Find pi.wav in your Program Files\Sony\VAIO Event Service folder and rename the file to anything else. Now, when a function key is pushed, the Event Service doesn't know where to find the file for the beep, and it doesn't seem to particularly care either.

Or, alternately, you could probably move whatever sound you wanted into that folder and rename that file to pi.wav. In this case, it would play your sound whenever you pushed a function key -- although I should mention that I have not tried this myself...

In Vista, you can simply mute the Vaio Event Service sound or change the volume of the beeps by bringing up the Mixer. Double click on the Speaker icon in the bottom right of the system tray. Click on Mixer. You should see a a volume setting for Vaio Event Service. This will control the volume of the beeps. It's that simple :D

Press the FN-key and brightness and/or volume so it makes a noise, then check the mixer. It'll be there.

Ok I found it. For those that can't find it, go to the mixer as Mobilehavoc has pointed out and use the Fn key to make it beep. After it beeps, my Event service bar showed up to the right so it wasn't immediately displayed, drag the side-scroll bar to the right to see it.
