Generic (or any other L2 owners),
Can you comment on fan noise? Apparently this was an issue with the previous L series (fan constantly on and quite loud).
Thanks. -
There's one big vent located at the top of the machine but it's quiet for most of the time when browsing, youtube, etc. Gaming on the machine does make the fan spin up a bit but given the fact that you'd probably game with speakers or headsets that shouldn't be a problem really. It's more or less the same amount of noise the Z can make.
-
When we use it for our light computing there is no noticeable fan noise. The most intensive thing we did (but not that intense) so far is watch a blu ray while editing photos and a few other light tasks, there was still no noticeable fan noise. The only time I heard the fan was when the sun was out and hitting our computer through the window, that made some noise. But we put that tint sheet there and it's been fine since.

Sorry to bring this thread back from the dead.
Apparently a 3D L will be coming out in a couple of months, judging by the preorder date mentioned.
Sony announces Vaio L-Series all-in-one with 3D display | E3 2011 - CNET Reviews -
Cool that they announced it. I remember at the beginning of the year at CES it was mentioned that this computer would gain a 3D option later in the year.
Can't really say I'm upset, though, since we'd probably never use that feature! -
Interesting. I just bought one and am waiting for delivery. Sony is offering $200.00 off on a current purchase. Based on this discounted price, it looks like the 3D version is about $400.00 more expensive.
-
Is there any way to prevent the fan from turning on? -
Sorry I can't help with the fan noise- ours is still silent. I've only heard the fan twice for a short period of time and we weren't doing anything intensive- so maybe the fan does its own thing every once in a while.
Is it particularly warm where your computer is? -
Yea, the 3D capability of the new L is a gimmick really (points at graphics card).
Now that I've tried to export 1080p video on the L it now exhibits a certain level of fan noise that may really annoy people, but hey exporting 1080p is no easy task and my Z also exhibited very large fan noise when doing the same task. Under normal circumstances (IE, email, etc.) I never hear the fan operating. -
I just got mine. Started setting it up this evening. The picture is sweeeet.
-
Plan on upgrading the HDD?
-
Not at this time. The transfer speed is adequate for our needs. Win8 is scheduled to come out August of 2012 and I might move to an SSD at that point.
Have you upgraded yours yet? Let us know how it works out. -
Not yet, Sata III 250GB are a little too expensive for us right now, but I feel that it lags at times to open applications and booting up. But then again I'm just used to my laptops' speeds.
-
I am a little bummed out as my new Vaio L's speakers are not working. After spending 30 minutes with Sony tech, I now need to have someone come onsite to replace the speakers. I am not a happy camper.
-
Did it come out of the box like that or it stopped working after you got it?
-
It stopped working the day after I got it. I spent 30 minutes on the phone with Sony as we uninstalled and reinstalled the drivers and tried some other stuff. The sound was okay through headphones but would not play through the speakers. The rep said the speakers needed to be replaced. So, while I am waiting for a third party service company to call me to set up an appointment, what happens? The speakers started working again. I am a little spooked.
-
Sounds like a software gremlin. Since they started working, I'd just closely monitor the situation and don't let the tech come out.
BTW, getting the cover off the back of the L could be a little frightening for the first time. I'm telling you this because it's possible the tech has never even seen an L computer before. But you set the computer flat down on the screen, unscrew the four screws at the back cover. Here, I'd recommend two people. One person to hold the computer so it stays horizontal, and the other person to grab the boomerang handle of the stand. Pull as hard as you can up so that you're unlatching the bottom of the panel first, then the top will come off easily. It'll make a loud sound and you may think you've cracked something, but this is how I took mine off twice now. -
How difficult is it really to remove the back cover and stand? I am about take the plunge and purchase a SSD. I am worried about the part where you said "Pull as hard as you can up so that you're unlatching the bottom of the panel". How difficult is it to put everything back into place? -
When it's apart it's easy to put back together.
What you do is set the computer down (on some towels) face down on the screen. Unscrew the four screws at the corners of the back cover where the metal stand goes into the computer. Pull up with force trying to pry the bottom half up first, then you can work the top edge clips off after the bottom is off.
Reassembling is just doing everything backwards. It'll be easy to clip the back cover back onto the base (requires some force). You'll have to manhandle the computer in order to get the back cover off.
I used this to help me even though it was a tad misleading:
http://www.docs.sony.com/release/989202623_VPCL2_series_HDD_CRU.pdf
Take a look at step 4. You want the clips on the bottom to come up first, then the rest will be easy. I misread the image and thought it wanted me to shift the panel clockwise. Instead it opens upwards.
It's fairly straightforward to take the computer apart. It just makes a loud noise and sounds like you broke something when you unclip the cover off, but both times I did it, nothing broke.
Please let me know how your quest for the SSD goes and if you plan on doing SATAIII. -
Anyone know if it's possible to install NVIDIA 275.55 drivers on the L? The L likely doesn't use hybrid graphics like the Z/SB/SA, but apparently I can't get the package to install on the L.

Some of you may find this interesting.

Thanks Rachel very much for the link!
Something I'm a little confused by. So it appears that they tried using an Intel 510 (Sata III) and Intel 320 (Sata II) and had troubles using the recovery software and were unable to do it?
Then they tried an OCZ Vertex 3 (Sata III) and it worked. But from the numbers given in Crystal Disk Mark, can we now be assured that the L is Sata III capable? -
I just purchased this in the Sony Outlet for $900 shipped. Is it easy to upgrade RAM on this machine?

Please regard the post above: http://forum.notebookreview.com/sony/562504-anyone-all-interested-vaio-l-4.html#post7646083
Once you get the cover off, you'll see the two Dimms for the RAM. You'll need to use force to get the cover off, to the point that you may feel like you'll break something, but it will come off. Good luck!
In terms of easiness, it's more difficult than a laptop, but it's not too bad. Just requires a little balls! -
Sorry to revive an old thread. But does anyone know how to access the bios of the L Series?
-
Achusaysblessyou eecs geek ftw :D
-
Xwalker, did you ever install the SSD? Or are you asking about the BIOS so you can install Win7 onto your SSD?
Anyone at all interested in the Vaio L?
