I had a 780 order from Sony Style until they bumped the date to the 19th of Feb. I canceled and went with Portable One. I also switched to XP Pro and a clean image and a 200G 700RPG HD, and a free ship date of Feb 6. Hopefully this time next week.

I canceled with SS, and have no plan to re-order the SZ. IT doesn't look like it will ship with Penryn anytime soon.

Ivan' first email said the item was going out late this week or early next week. Then quoted Feb 6th as the latest ship date after I placed my order. Who knows if the Penryn delay affects them or not. I haven't heard different yet though I wouldn't be surprised if delays happened. I didn't know members of this forum got discounts so I didn't ask. P1 also took payment upon order and didn't wait till shipment. Next week will tell the story, I guess.

I'm still waiting on my SZ780. My order is all paid for. More than likely the blame is on Sony. No distributor can speed it up if they too along with everyone else are waiting for shipments to go out. I say be patient and wait for P1 to ship em out!

The wait is more than worth it. If any prolonged delays do occur, I am sure P1 will offer some sort of bonuses to keep their clients happy.

I ordered several days ago - a 780 - and spoke with Ivan yesterday ... my order is being configured and will ship Monday

I would also point out that P1 is currently less than Sony plus they include free shipping and no sales tax

Looks like SonyStyle raised their price on the CTO SZ 780. I had a feeling they might because that was pretty cheap when i ordered. I got mine for $1491 with free shipping + tax over the phone from Sony on Jan 31st. I got the base config with an upgrade to the T8300 2.4Ghz processor.

I canceled my order for the SZ780 and went with a T61P with 4GB ram, nvidia 570m, 160gb 7200K, 1680 x 1050 LCD, T9300, dual layer dvd and it came total with microsoft discounts to 1442.

Thats nearly 400 cheaper than the Vaio and it will actually be here sooner.

Oh well, thanks a lot Sony delays.

I already received my SZ780 and was wondering if this laptop has less bloatware than previous generations.
It came with aol/aol tool bar, norton, some spyware remover, and a screensaver. Judging from threads I've read on this forum, I was expecting it to be much worse.

I'm also serioulsy thinking about this.. I currently own TXN27N, and it lacks on power allot.. seems like SZ has dropped in weight, yet improved power and battery life.

How do you guys think of it's performance on Vista?

What about FAN noise?? any one is bothered by that??

I think it performs wonderfully in Vista, with 2GB+ of RAM you'll be good. As for fan noise, I previously owned a SZ320 with no fan problems and my 650 also doesn't seem to have any. Of course you can hear it if you really listen, but who does that anyway? With some music on you won't even notice it.

I think the fan on the latest SZ has improved quite a bit. It could be due to the power consumption of the latest CPU when you really work it hard.

Something extra to share. It is kinda funny when I think about loud SZ fan noise. My professor from one of the classes I'm taking is using a SZ360 (I think I got his model number right). He always brings it to class, turns it on, & hooks it to the classroom's PC to make use of the overhead projector. The interesting thing is that you'll start hearing loud "whirring" noises from the point he starts his SZ. I'm sitting in the middle of the classroom & boy was it loud! Hee! Hee! Hopefully, he's not reading this... :D

Okay guys, I have made up my mind for VGN-SZ780N5

I have checked Google Shopping and it's showing quite a few places have it.. But no one have it in stock, P1 says he will get it next week so does every one else... but seems like this is the best SZ780N for the bucks.

It has T9300 processor clocking at 2.5GHz...

One question to people with T9300 processor, how is it with heat?? does it make FAN go crazy???

I think SZ791N has same processor, so if you have any input please share :)

    Thanks

My SZ780 with 160GB 7200RPM HDD is arriving next week with NO bloatware. It's a free service offered by P1 when you purchase from them. You can buy the DVD's from them and perform the bloatware removal yourself. Hope you like you new 780.

    160GB 7200RPM. Really? I can only see 200GB 7200RPM from both P1 and Sonystyle.

I am after a port replicator and I am not sure if it comes with an AC adapter.

I am also wondering if the DVD's from them will work with Vaios that are not purchased from P1.

Yep! Got it direct from P1. Don't spend too much time searching for an aftermarket docking station for the SZ. They all have their issues, etc. Stick with the Sony brand, it's not the best, but you won't have any issues. You have to buy the AC adapter separately. Buy an aftermarket one, they're less money and just as good. Yes, you can use the bloatware removal DVD's for your units I think they're about 25 bucks. Send email to Ivan and he'll take care of you.

FedEx just dropped off my SZ780N5 from portableOne and I have to say its a beauty. The screen is imaculate there is a slight light leakege but nothing to complain about it, no dead or stuck pixels and I was relieve to see that I don't have the yellow lines some are complaining about. I know alot of people dont like the keyboard but I personally like it, the keys dont stick, they are very easy to press and I can type comfortably. The battery is not loose at all, and P1 did a fantastic job with the bloatware removal, my notebook was running at a very nice speed right out the box. Right now I'm about to start installing my programs and do some customizing to my desktop. I'm very happy and satisfied with my purchase, my first impressions with the notebook is a good one, crossing my fingers it stays that way. :D

Everything is fine and dandy with my P1 SZ780N5. I had XP installed on mine and a bloatware removal. I did have to go to Sony's SZ780 driver page and dl and install the XP driver for the Broadcom bluetooth device but everything else was great. I'm a new fan of Portable One.

Guys, I am quite serious about SZ780N5 as well..

Guys, how does Vista Perform on this machine.. especially bootup time.. can any one time it and please post it? Just with 2GB Ram is fine.. if you have 4GB post that too.. so we can all compare..

Also please do say if you have 5400 RPM Hard Drive or 7200 RPM

    Thanks

I have Windows Vista Business on my SZ7, 2gigs of ram(upgrading to 4gigs) and 1600GB 5400RPM hard drive. My experience with vista has been very good, its not slugish at all in fact it runs very smoothly and thanks to flamenko's tweaking guide I was able to speed up my shutdown and logon times, my shutdown time is about 20sec and my bootup time is a lil over 45 sec, I turned off alot of services in msconfig that I don't use so my programs on my taskbar load up almost instantly. Took a lot of trial and error with disabling and enabling some service but it was all worth it. I now have a fast and reliable little machine that is a dream to use. :D

I jumped on the bandwagon also, and hopefully will be receiving my SZ780N5 from PortableOne soon. This forum played a big part in my decision-making. Just a few months ago I knew nothing about Intel processors, dedicated graphics cards, the makes or sizes of different laptops, etc. Not only will this be my first laptop, it will be my first Intel/Windows machine (that I've owned; I've used them at work before). I hope to install one or more of Linux/*BSD/Solaris on it though.

I had been waiting to see what would come out of the recent Macworld Expo; the lack of features (no optical drive!) on the new MacBook Air made my decision a lot easier.

Just got my SZ780 today configured with the 4GB mem and 200GB 7200 RPM HD.

The first thing I did was burn recovery CDs and then blew away the installation to install XP Pro. Everything went well with the downloads from the SZ80 driver page and all appears to be working again, except....

I have one unidentified hardware item. And I believe it is the web cam. I see that's not a download provided on the SZ780 driver page.

So, I tried to download and install the driver for the SZ680, but the install indicates "not for this model". Has anyone worked around this yet and found driver that will work with the SZ780.

    Thanks for any input.

I received my SZ780N5 with the 200gb 7200rpm hd and 4gb of G.SKILL memory I brouht off newegg ($80). I had a 15" Asus before and the quality on this laptop is vastly superior. The led-baclight lcd is amazingly thin and image quality is very sharp. The ability to choose between dedicated and integrated graphics is also great. The T9300 runs very cool and I'm getting about 3.5hrs just surfing the net. The 7200rpm also runs cool and barely makes any noise.

I have 2 grips about it though. One, the battery is not perfectly snug; it moves around slightly. Second, the keyboard does make more noise then I would like. Sony should implement the tz keyboard for this since it would prevent any particulates from entering the keyboard.

Did I mention that it is a very sexy laptop? Overall, I'm very pleased with this laptop and the customer service (Ivan basically) I received from P1. It is quite possibly the best notebook that balances performance, portability, and sexiness.

That's pretty much what I want in my future SZ, except I want to go for 2GB RAM. Great to hear that the SZ is such a wonderful machine. I am already at a point where I am not even going to consider both Apple nor Dell. Vaio SZ ftw. :)

not sure if they changed it. It looks like (from reading the sz680 specs) that the camera is the same. But the installer provided by Sony for the sz680 will only work with that model. When attempting to use it on the sz780, you get a message indicating "incorrect model".

I also found that the downgrade disc shipped with the sz780 will not work with the computer. You get the same message indicating wrong model. This, even though the label on the dvd is "VGN-sz700N", which would imply that it would work with all sz7 models. But it doesn't. So, in short, I ended up putting Vista back on for the time being.(the recovery discs do work great but take a long time.)

Unfortunately I was bitten by the Vista patch that causes computer to go into endless reboot and I restored to a point that was causing weird issues. So, after three rebuilds, I'm still on Vista. Took about an hour to remove all the applications that come installed, but its working now.

The screen is awesome. Still getting used to the keyboard, but it'll be alright. Makes lots of noise compared to the HP laptop I was just using.

Yea! I received my SZ780N5 from PortableOne yesterday (the 26th) actually. :)

However, my excitement is tempered by some frustration as I cannot connect to my wireless network yet. :(

I will try some more things, and do some reading, and probably end up contacting P1.

I also burned a Linux Mint 4.0 live CD, and successfully booted it -- but only when on the "Speed" graphics setting. For some reason, it won't boot on the "Stamina" setting. I'm unable to connect wirelessly with this also. Hopefully I can find some answers here and/or the Ubuntu forums.

Some quick miscellaneous first impressions, not really on the laptop itself:

    - FedEx revised their delivery estimate in mid-stream and got it to me a day earlier than originally thought.

    - The Neoprene case is thin, soft, and flexible, so not really protective against anything but scratches (I don't know if it's water-resistant or not). It fits the laptop snugly; maybe a little too snugly since I worry about scratching it (the irony!) just zipping it closed. But it's free, so no complaints!

    - Maybe this is old hat for you people who order stuff all the time, but I was pretty impressed with the packaging. It's like the laptop is suspended inside the box with plastic and cardboard without any bubble wrap or foam peanuts. You don't even have to break the plastic which means you can reuse it if you have to send it somewhere.

I'm sure someone will be able to tell you, but for me bloatware removal was a free option since I ordered it with the laptop.

I also ordered the XP downgrade (free), but I'm discovering the manual, and other instructions I find around assume you are running Vista if I'm not mistaken.

Now that's surprising. I had a Fedex shipment that I was watching the tracking on, and it showed as "on truck for delivery" 2 days early. When it never arrived that day, I checked tracking again, and it showed as "returned to warehouse, not due yet"!

In any case, I am expecting a 780NW on Monday..... Although I have read nothing but good things about Portable One, I decided to buy elsewhere after finding it for $1,609. Keeping my fingers crossed....

Just receive SZ780N5 this morning ..
happen to see the SYSTEM INFO, it shown as CORE DUO @2.5 GHz 2.5 GHz ..
but on device manager it said 2 core processor with each of 2.4 GHz ...

Is this expected for Core 2 Duo @2.5 GHz shown as 2.4GHz in device manager ?
Could anyone has SZ780N5 confirm the same ?

Did you go to the Sony support page to download the fix?

I ordered the SZ780N5 from P1, and processor shows up as 2.5GHz in both system info and device manager.
