I run NOD32 and mine's fine. Does it go slow and stay slow or hang for a little while at first boot?

I'm wondering if maybe it is confliciting with the Trend Micro antispyware ?

I already uninstalled Norton, but there's something in my MSCONFIG startup section called "NvCtl" or something, and it seems like a Norton thing... I disabled it.

I tried disabling NOD in the startup and it didn't help, but uninstalling it did.

I should maybe try un-installing Trend first, then re-installing NOD...

    Proph:

OK so if other people aren't having problems, maybe its the software we have installed ?

I uninstalled most of the ****ware...

    I have:

Maya, 3ds max, Photoshop, Illustrator, Visual Studio 2005

    installed.

Any of those match with what you have ?

I haven't tried Nod32 On a SZ, however on all of my desktops it has only occured once.

If you have traces of other antivirus apps installed, nod32 tends to run slower than it should for reasons i'm not too sure of.

If you still have some kind of antivirus lurking, such as the sony bundled norton (Which is pure **** anyway) then try uninstalling that, then clean up after norton by removing startup options (start -> run: msconfig) that relate to norton, and that should help.

LOL Proph I intalled the exact same one ! :)

So we're both happy I guess.

It's a pretty good AV so far too.

XantaxNZ: I tried removing everything starting with Nv from my msconfig already... didn't help...

The hang on startup is quite possibly DHCP related. Try manually assigning an IP address.

Hm... I'm using DHCP... so I'll try that out.

BitDefender is good so far tho...

I have NOD32 but I haven't noticed any slow-down, maybe except of XP startup time, which seems to me takes longer and longer with every new software on my SZ. I did semi-clean install so no problem with norton at all.

What's the best antivirus anyways? I've been using Norton for years so I haven't tried out other antiviruses. Any opinions?

I am using NOD32 on my SZ and I'm not experiencing any slowdowns whatsoever. However, I've uninstalled pretty much everything that came with the standard installation, safe for some Vaio utilities I figured would be useful.
I'm not quite sure about the DHCP thing, the network I'm in doesn't use it, but I've used computers with NOD in DHCP networks before and they all worked flawlessly.

    Anything but Nortons. :)

Ok. Just kidding. Well actually i'm serious, but I guess thats not the answer you were looking for.

I use NOD32. Can't really fault it on performance or price.

They do a two week trial, so I would suggest you try that first. If all goes well buy it. But don't buy first, because no AV is perfect, there's always something they don't like or conflict with.
