Hey everybody... I just bought my first-ever Windows machine. Don't get too excited, I didn't give up on my Macs, I just needed to get a PC for all the stock trading I'm doing these days (and a laptop that I can use my new Verizon broadband card with). I have used Windows before, just never owned one. It's powered up, Norton security is configured, and I'm connected to my AirPort network. So now I need to know what happens next. Do I need to create a recovery/restore disc? If so, is there a certain way to do it? I'm sure there are other things I need to know about, so please feel free to get me started right by letting me know! [ :D]

Something I forgot to ask... is it common practice to remove the stickers around the touchpad (including the XP/Centrino stuff), and on the lid? Never had that with a PowerBook or iBook. But I don't want to take them off if that diminishes the value or anything!

And man oh man, this screen is the most beautiful thing I've ever seen...

Ah, just thought of another question. Mine came with 512mb of memory, which I'll probably bump to 1gig. What kind should I buy, and how much should I expect to pay for it?

i left the sticker as it is.

    MEMORY:
if you want to buy the memory, go to crucial.com or buy from ebay. make sure that the memory is compatible with your notebook. you might want to buy 1x1gb or 2x512mb. your current notebook now has 2x256mb and fs550 only have 2 dimm slots. upgrading memory is easy. it's all in the bottom part. remove screw, open, and you can see the memory slots there.

    RECOVERY DISC:
i strongly recommend you to create recovery cd. how to do it? go to start help & support, you can see "create recovery cd menu". you will need 1CD-R + 1DVD-R or 7CD-R to back up all those stuffs in the machine. By the way, I need the recovery CD too. if you can copy those for me, I'll pay by check/paypal for you help. I formatted the hdd and upgraded to windows xp pro. then i realized that some of the sony applications are not available for download and only available in the recovery disc. so if you can help me copying the recovery disc, i'll really appreciate it.

    thanks,

You don't have to remove the stickers, but most people don't like them so they remove them. The screen is very beautiful, thats the one good thing about Sony laptops.
