I just bought a Targus bag for my Sony Vaio, and one of the features of the bag is a magnetic flap that closes. Inside the bag has pockets where I store my portable harddrive. The magnetic button is right above my harddrive, so I'm a little concerned if this is going to be a problem or not.

    Anyone have any experience?

    Thanks

i don't think it would be a good idea though...

i know i got 2 credit cards that can't be used anymore coz of magnets, and needed to be replaced

No. There's an extremely powerful neodymium magnet inside your hard drive.

If i'm not mistaken the official case for the new Z series uses a magnetic clasp, then again, the Z uses SSDs, but I think you should be safe.

    location is different....

for the official case the magnetic clip is not anywhere near the laptop HDD location, and furthermore there is a thick laptop plastic casing to protect it...

but for storing the portable hdd, the magnet will be right beside it, which i don't really recommend at all actually...

if a credit card can be rendered useless via magnets, it would be worse for something more fragile like a hdd

Talking about magnets, doesn't the VAIO Z notebook have a magnet in the LED lid to ensure that it "clips" into place when the lid is closed?

From my experience, it just has kinda like a click in the hinges that holds the lid closed. But the Apple MacBooks do, and like Lithus said, there is no harm that can come from a magnetic clasp. I have HDD magnets on my refrigerator and you have to almost pry those suckers off. ;)

Yes, it does, as well as the official Sony case for VGN-Z.

... and so does the fan.
Not to mention the magnetic fields caused by every single component and cable through which current runs.

The magnet used in that video comes from a hard drive, which is (as was stated) way more powerful than the magnet in the bag. It stalled the hard drive since it can counteract the strong magnet within the drive. Note this happened when the hard drive was working.
