I currently have a VGN-NR498E and I'm purchasing a VGN-AR370 - both are completely operational with good hard drives. I am buying the VGN-AR370 because it's got an HDMI port and a better graphics processor.

I would like to switch the hard drives so I don't have to transfer all the data / programs to the new computer. My plan is to give the old one without the HDMI to my girlfriend. Are the hard drives compatible or will I have to manually transfer everything?

Thanks in advance for any and all assistance!

You can certainly put your old drive in the new computer, but you will have to reinstall windows and all applications.

If you expect that your system will boot the way you have it, just on the new PC - that is not possible.
Apart from the technical reasons, your Windows license is valid only for your current laptop.

Okay, so if I keep them as is...Is there an easy way to transfer files from one computer to the other? Do I need an external hard drive? Is there some kind of transfer cable I could connect the laptops with?

EDIT: I've seen some things about cloning a hard drive. Can I create a hard drive clone for the old laptop and put it on the new one? Or do I have the same OS licensing problems?

Don't clone. Just use the microsoft files and settings transfer wizard built into windows. Cloning will still cause you to need reinstall o/s. Either way you'll have to reinstall all your applications.
