I've been looking at the vaio SE, mainly for its screen, but today went to have a look at one in person and was very disappointed. Although the main chassis was very sturdy, the screen was extremely flimsy with loads of flex in it and the hinges felt like they would break at any minute, this model was however the sand bridge model and i was wondering if the hinges have been changed for the ivy bridge model. Another thing i noticed was sony claimed it has a magnesium chassis and it felt awfully plasticky to me.
I currently have a vaio CW2 and have been looking to replace it as i'm fed up of the low res screen and the i3 is a tad slow, I have considered the vaio z as well but even that didn't feel particularly sturdy.

The only outer surface that isn't magnesium alloy is the plastic strip along the top of the display (needed for the antennas).
But since that strip is what you seem to grasp the most often when opening and closing the laptop, thinking the whole outside is plastic is understandable.
And yes, the 2012 model has the same hinge and display. I've said this a lot lately; the screen is flexible, but not flimsy. World of difference between those two words. It's quite durable (the opposite of flimsy).
Seriously, go read the SE thread in the owners lounge and see how many people have snapped the hinges or folded the display. -
EDIT: wrong thread, sorry! hehe

Thanks for the reply i may go and have another look at it elsewhere, the one I looked at was in PC world and did look a bit beaten up so it possible it could have been damaged, Im also looking at the new Dell XPS although its not for sale in the UK yet and it looks as if it could be expensive and to be honest I dont want to spend much more than £1000

I'd rather have my PC flex a bit under stress that goes back to its normal shape afterwards without issues. Much better then those super-rigid aluminium machines, knock those on a corner and you have a dent or it's bent permanently. Can you imagine what whould happen if someone smashes their big carry-on bag ontop of your bag in the overhead compartment? With my Z or X, I'm confident they will survive.
Are the hinges on the new vaio SE the same as on the old one
