Hi. I just ran PCPitstop on my FW490 (running Vista Home Premium 64 bit), and the Driver recommendations report listed two drivers which they suggest changing:

    1) Realtek High Definition Audio current driver is 6.0.1.5759 , to proposed driver 6.0.1.5888.

    2) Marvell Yukon 88E8055 PCI-E Gigabit Ethernet Controller current driver is 10.53.2.3 to proposed driver 10.70.6.3.

The recommended drivers do not appear on the Sony eSupport site for my specific model (VGN-FW490CJ).

Should I leave well enough alone, or is Sony not posting the most current drivers for my Vaio.

    Thank.

Leave them alone. Sony will post devices drivers as needed.

    cheers ...

Hah! That's the joke of the day.

Sony will generally only post new drivers if they have to, either because of legal liability, or because newer Sony software requires newer drivers.

When you buy a Sony, what you see is what you get, and you can not expect updates. If Sony releases any updates, swell, but mostly, you will be running with whatever the machine was released with, no matter how obsolete.
In Sony's way of thinking, the way to get newer drivers is to buy a new machine.

Thanks. I'm tempted to download the drivers from other sites, but will wait. As far as "what you see is what you get", I am very satisfied with the Vaio. It runs very well, and I have had no major issues. The difference between the FW490 and my old IBM Thinkpad (T41), is day and night.

I use many machines with just stock drivers, and will take them new when they are being made available either by MS or brand manufacturers. They have performed well so far and still are not obsolete.

I would be interested to see you show the pros and cons of having drivers being constantly updated.

    cheers ...
