I have a Sony Vaio laptop that has a blu-ray drive in it (Optiarc BD ROM BC-5500S4) which will not read any discs. It had been working fine a few days ago, but now any time I out a disc in, or even when I just open and close the disc drive, it makes a pulsating noise. It is sort of like the noise it would make if it were starting to spin and read the disc, but pulses for about a minute. I can see the icon for the drive in the my computer window, but never a cd or dvd. If I click on the icon for the drive, it pops up a window that says please insert disc.

All of my firmware is up to date, and in the device manager it says the device is working properly.

Does anybody have any idea what might be going on? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

It this happening with just Blu-Ray disks or with other media as well? Also with the drive empty, go to "My Computer" and what type of drive does Windows say it is... like BD-ROM or DVD-RW...etc?

It happens with cds and dvds as well. With no disc in the drive, it comes up as BD-ROM Drive.

Have you done a clean install of Windows? If so you might could try updating your chipset drivers... that usually solves some problems.

That pulsing noise sounds like the laser assembly is hunting, trying to focus on the disc but not finding it. If you're lucky a bit of fluff is stuck to the lens, try blowing it off or cleaning it; if you're unlucky the laser has failed, or the lens has been banged out of place by the drawer opening or closing before the laser has parked.

I have this exactly problem. Have you solved it?
Once I restored my computer to it's factory settings, and the drive were ok after that!
But now it's dead again. I guess it's a problem about compatibility with some software.

are you using an iso mounting software at all.
I was using Virtual Clone Drive and it caused huge problems with my Mata BD-MLT UJ-220S. Drive would not read cds, would fail 75% with burning media. Constant Seeking when trying to read a disc. Uninstall the software and reboot, Problem went away.
    Hope this helps

    maybe that's the problem

I had this software once (maybe it broke something here!). But I unninstalled it several weeks ago. My drive has been broken for two months.

Is there anything else I can do to really remove it?

I already unninstalled daemon tools also. But I'm sure the drive was working after I installed Daemon tools and before I installed Virtual Clone Drive.

reinstall the application, reboot, uninstall with say Revo Uninstaller, reboot
maybe that will clean the broken install?.
