that is awesome! i love the way it looks...unfortunately i can't spend that kind of dough on the upper-end model...will that option ever be available on lower lined Z's, or is it a true "premium" only option??

edit: would there be a way to only order the lid through the spare parts?? I'm sure it would be expensive, though, as its carbon fiber, but at least it could be an option?

Thanks for the news! I was afraid we wouldn't get the option until the Z6XX models came in December/January. It really does look lovely! :)

Does anyone know why the prices of the Z's have dropped just recently? Will there be a refresh coming very soon? I don't see what could be refreshed now, we have the premium carbon lid option and 256gb SSD option. We will get some more Montevina processors in a few months....

Its too bad we can't get the free Mobility or Productivity bundle if you buy the Z from SonyStyle right? Because its looking VERY tempting, the lowered price of the Z590 CTO and Premium Carbon option. :(

Sony probably drop the prices of the Z because they're feeling the heat of the competition that Apple is providing with their MacBooks. :D

You can always buy it from PortableOne. They are one of the authorized Sony business solutions provider/reseller and so buying from them will entitle you to qualify for the Mobility and Productivity bundle rebate. The good news is that P1 has also dropped prices on some of the models/configs. :)

It looks like you can get the bundles if you buy from the B2B section of Sony but I don't get a 10% student discount that Geeee was mentioning on the consumer site, sigh......there's always a compromise to make. :)

Hi peeps, I'm a bit confused with this premium carbon. In the picture at the top from the link the plastic/carbon around the keyboard looks black but the smaller pictures below look silver on all the other images. Is it black or silver the plastic?

I agree. I don't feel those pictures show the weave/texture, but I certainly appreciate the effort and pictures. Sony's pictures of the lids seem so fake, it's hard to imagine which really looks better in person.

I am very curious to know if the weave makes the lid match the rest of the laptop, or if it makes it look quite different. (Does that make sense? Like if it's a 'different' black and looks out of place, or if it still blends into the style of the laptop.) I also have this weird curiosity if either lid is more prone to fingerprints/scuffs/scratches?

Since I want to try the Z590 and want the P9500, I'm stuck with going premium carbon, but ... I'm still curious! ;)

Although the following pic is for the SZ, it should still give you a very good idea the difference in looks:

To be honest, with my SZ Premium Carbon lid, you'll have to look at it at certain angles, certain lighting conditions/environments to "really see" the weave pattern. Just my opinion.

almost $200 for the original lid. The premium carbon is not available for sale yet. The carbon lid is my most favorite thing for Vaio and now, I regret getting the laptop too early.

When the Z Premium Carbon lid is finally for sale in the Sony Spare Parts dept, it is likely going to be about $250 to $300 USD. That is before shipping and taxes.

Yes, they are TZ and Z.

That is gray leather. It's not real leather but it does show leather texture. You can see and touch the texture.
Unless I look really close, it looks like OEM.

*sob* :p This place kills me sometimes. I'm so beyond ready for a Z, but I agree ... the rumors and temptation to wait kills. Personally, I think I've put a final limit ... I *will* Have a Z by Christmas. LOL. If I am within 30 days of a refresh, I could return/rebuy provided it wouldn't be out of budget. Otherwise, sucks for me, I could always save and buy a part upgrade for something like the backlit keyboard.

Isn't the premium carbon pretty?? It's simple, but unique compared to most plain black lids ... and I kind of love the way it echos the brushed palm wrest look, too. Minor details, but I like it. I just hope I can tolerate the 590's resolution in order to keep it. :p I wish they'd give the 540 the option of that lid, even if they upped the cost of adding it as an upgrade.

Alaska - I would go ahead and use the 21 day no-Q-asked return policy to good use if I were you! That means buy it around December 10th and you will DEFINATELY be in great timing if they release it pre-holiday sale event :D

You have 30 days to return, I called Sony to double check (asked about a CTO notebook, no engraving).

Also, it starts from the day they charge your credit card rather than the date you place the order. Since it seems ~ a week before they ship from the day you place the order, if I could hold out until the 25th I'd probably have myself covered for all of December. I'll have to see if I can make it that much longer at this point.

    I went ahead and bought a Z.

The price drops right now + the productivity bundle makes it well worth it for me.

Backlit keyboard and slot loading drive (assuming that's true) are nice but doesn't affect me much and I think we are seeing a good time price-wise now. With the recession now being pronounced Sony is assuredly paring down production and the deals to unload excess stock won't (IMO) be as good.

back light keyboard won't come to Sony anytime soon so don't worry. Sony will definitely wait and introduce a completely new high end series with backlight keyboard, then slowly introduce it to other series after several revision. It's the business way to make more money by Sony and we all know it by now. So... if anyone is hopping for backlight and barely can afford the Z. I say just to stay put and wait for a discount on old model when a new revision comes. I personally don't think backlight keyboard will help me to be any more productive on my laptop than I already am. Besides, I don't need to look at the keyboard when I'm typing like them. :D
