Does the backlight ever come on?

Does it come on when you turn the power on and then go away?

this is going to be a nightmare for you...
you will need to wait more or less 9 months for the next bios update...

as you can see from z series, they took 9 months just to fix 1 problem "password for startup and password when resuming from hibernation/standby".

and need more or less 9 months for them to release new graphic driver 188.80 - 190.24

    edit:
    I have better suggestion...
ask someone with the previous bios (1110Y6 if i am not mistaken) to dump their firmware using "flash 1t"(change 1 to i and no space) and pass it to you.
but before you use it you need some modification for the "serial number" and "service tag number" using some free tool like xvi32.

Are you saying that you know of others with this laptop, who upgraded bios, have the same problem? Unless that's the case, then this is not a "bios update" type of an issue.

Is there a chance you flashed the wrong bios? (ie used the bios for a model without a backlit keyboard)?

Well, I don't have any real idea but just wondering if you've tried re-installing the new BIOS update again? Will it let you do that? I don't know if it checks your version and will stop you because it's already updated or not. Like someone else said, you can try flashing back to the original BIOS if you get a copy of that. Are you sure it was the BIOS update? Did you install or uninstall anything else around the same time?

Also, this won't likely help but it won't hurt either - have you tried re-installing Vaio Control Center and see if it recognizes your back-lit keyboard? You can do that one of two ways - in Vaio Care under Recovery you can re-install apps and find it there or you can download the entire Sony Notebook Utilities, which includes VCC, from your Sony eSupport page.

Sorry, not of much help. I have a different model than you and different BIOS.
