My new VAIO F12 has a setting for prolonging battery life by keeping it charged at either 80% maximum, or 50% maximum. I pretty much use my laptop as a desktop replacement, and as such, it is always plugged in in my living room. I'm assuming that to keep my battery as long as possible, I should therefore set it to the 50% setting, correct?

Yes, that's correct. 50% is best when mostly plugged in.

Just let it discharge to below 50%, turn on that setting and keep it plugged in.
It will now always stay at 50% and you're good to go.
