If I routinely charge and uncharge my battery (I use the laptop unplugged for several hours each day), is there any reason to set the battery care function at 80% instead of 100%? Or is that just for laptops like my F2, which sometimes doesn't get unplugged for a month at a time?

The charge percentage is not the only factor that reduces its life, heat is also quite a big one. Ideally, Li-ion batteries should be stored at 40% charge in the fridge. I have the battery care set to 50% and only let it charge to 100% if I know I'll need it for a meeting or trip. On my old TX1 and Z1, I usually removed the battery at around 40% charge to avoid heating it by the laptop, but it's too cumbersome on the SVZ.

I thought the 80% was intended for frequent battery use, whereas it's the 50% that's recommended if you leave it plugged in?

Sure, but those use patterns are compromises between optimal battery care (40% charge in fridge) and usability. Every time you charge it more than that or heat it for whatever reason, you lose battery life. You don“t have to feel bad about it every time, but with that knowledge, you can change a few key usage patterns and make your batteries last much longer.
