    While testing various Alps pointing device drivers for Vista, I found that the Sony/Dell/Toshiba versions all had an awkward feel to them and they couldn't detect my minuscule finger movements. However there's one version made for Fujitsu notebooks that's perfect for me. The default cursor movement is very fast and responsive and all the functions you'd expect from previous XP versions are there, such as the disable touchpad when a USB mouse is connected feature. If your Vaio has an Alps touchpad, you might want to check it out.

    32-bit version
    64-bit version

    Go to Control Panel --> Mouse to configure the settings.
    These settings are the most comfortable for me:
    -Disable Drag Lock
    -Tapping Speed: Fast
    -Use Scroll Function

    If you own a Vaio SZ (I haven't tested this with any other models) I recommend you to apply this registry file after you install the Fujitsu Alps touchpad driver. It increases the sample rate, input buffer length and some other tweaks which aren't modifiable in the Device Manager. If you don't like it you can always revert back to your old settings by applying the backed up registry file.

    Instructions:

    1. Download the registry file here or here.
    2. Click Start->Programs->Accessories, right click on Command Prompt and select run as administrator. In the Command Prompt type regedit and press enter.
    3. Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Enum\ACPI\SNY9001\ in Regedit and you will find a key with a unique id. Right click on "Device Parameters" inside that key and go to Export to backup your original settings.
    4. Open the sny9001mouse.reg file in notepad and locate the unique id. If the id doesn't match, change the id in the registry file to match what you have in your registry. See the attached pics.
    5. In the command prompt which you opened in step 2, go to where sny9001mouse.reg is stored (e.g. if it's located in the desktop type "cd \users\'your user name'\desktop") and type "regedit sny9001mouse.reg". When the pop-up window appears click Yes and reboot.

    These are the settings I use in HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Mouse, if anyone is wondering. The default settings have been omitted.

    [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Mouse]
    "MouseHoverTime"="20"
    "MouseSensitivity"="14"
    "MouseHoverWidth"="64"
    "MouseHoverHeight"="64"

    Yes, I already tested that driver before deciding on Fujitsu's. I know it comes down to personal preference, but the Sony/Dell/Toshiba Alps versions have an unusual acceleration and they're not as precise. I always have to either roll my finger a certain direction and press a little harder to go to exactly where I want, but with the Fujitsu version and that registry fix, everything is perfect.

    Interesting.
    Even though I have no problem with the Sony drivers I'll give those Fujitsu drivers a try to get a 'feel' for what you are saying.

    Does this work for XP? If not where can i get the XP version? I'm not liking the default XP drivers too much (sensitivity could be better for me).

    THanks

    You can download the XP version here:

    Code:
    http://www.laptopvideo2go.com/drivers/touchpad/alps_v5.5.1302.12_2k.xp.multilanguage.exe
    (copy and paste the address.)

    I think the Fujitsu driver was based off of this as it has the same interface.
