I ordered 1 GB ram from sony with my SR, but I want to upgrade to 3 GB with a 2GB stick of RAM.

    OR

Do you think it would be worth it to get 2 2GB sticks to run in dual chanel mode?

If I choose the first option, I can always buy a 2nd stick of 2GB later on if needed.

Anyway, which brand do you recomend? which model would be best compatible with the SR? i know there's a bunch of mumbo jumbo with timings, latency, ect.. and I need help with that..

    Here's my options:

    Thanks!!!

you just need whatever has the best latency.

lower the first 3 numbers and the higher the last number is what your looking for.

4-4-4-12 would be faster then 5-5-5-11

is it DDR2 800? if thats the case thats prety simple..
    see look at these 2:
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231154
    and
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231135

noticed how the both are the same products of same BRANDs and TYPE? Except the price difference and latancy. The first one i listed is the 4-4-4-12 and is more expensive. and the second one is like your stock sony ram speeds of like 5-5-5-12 (which this is slow).

but if you wanna save that money... and your happy with how fast your current stock one is.. then get the second one.

BTW. i just installed that same exact product (the first one i listed) in my Vaio.. and i couldn't be happyer.

    good luck.

EDIT: Ohh yeah I forgot Sony just released new bios updates for alot of their laptops like recently.. Mine was build just in March of this year and it was still out of date, and the bios did not read the 4gigs of ram... so you might to check up on that if you do end up goin to the dual channel 2 gigs of ram each (4gig total)

thanks vash! but those at 667 speed not 800.

also, i just want to make sure i don't get some rip off brand.. Like is patriot any good? OCTZ? Crucial? ect..

also, vash, the lower the CAS Latency the better, right??

oh sorry. haha my numbers are alittle off (i was thinking of 800, because my FSB is 800). but you get the point of what i mean. thats just an example.

the main thing is the timings. the 4-4-4-12 all the brands will roughly be about the same. but which ones are faster then the other ones at which voltage and ect ect.

heres the correct links if yours is the DDR2 800:

    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820227251
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820220312
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231156

My preference goes in this order from those 3:
    1. OCZ
    2. Patriot
    3. G.skill (i bought 2 sets of these for 2 PCs. but i only did it for the price and performance. in this case all 3 of those are the same in performance, but G.skill is the most expensive... so you might as well go with OCZ or patriot)

I only put OCZ first because check out those reviews.. 90 reviews with 5 starts.. vs the Patriot.. 3 reviews with 3 stars (thats pathetic) i think you know the right choice here.. haha.

oops forgot to answer your question. Yep the lower the first 3 numbers are the better. and the higher the last number is the better.

its the first 3 numbers is the quickness. and the last number you want higher.

check out this thread. it shows all this testing with higher and lower tras and what it does for gaming:
http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/showthread.php?t=18207 (if your too lazy to read that.. basicaly the higher tras settings beat the lower ones)

So yeah.. you want whatever has the lowest CAS Latency but have a high last number. (hope thats not confusing... so 5-5-5-18 would be better then 5-5-5-12)

that Link you gave of that Musklin is prety darn good.. it has the same volts as all the other ones.. with the same first 3 numbers. but it has a higher tRAS.. but yeah without that rebate.. the cost of that unit would end up costing ALOT more then the 3 choices i gave you with OCZ, Patriot, and G.skill... but if WITH that rebate.. its actually a prety sweet deal.
(I personally don't recommend mushkin... but heck... theres the specs right there... I don't like G.skill either but i bought 2 sets of it.. just because of the specs... iam ususaly brand loyal.. but in that case i went with G.skill just because it was faster.. in this case it looks like Mushkin is a better choice ONLY with the rebate in consideration)

do you think newegg would sell older models that would cause those errors?

"Overall Evaluation: OCZ is a really reliable company. This is my 3rd purchase on OCZ RAM because of my trust in the company. If you go to OCZ's official forums, it is known that some earlier matched sticks of this particular model (OCZ2M8004GK) cause BSOD in Windows and BIOS errors (probably a bad batch). It quickly got phased out so it should be no problem now. I tested my set with Memtest86+ for over 24 hours and it was error-free. "

the one on newegg is the same model #

That issue is old. Anyhow, I've been doing research for a long time now on this and I'm confident in chosing the OCZ. The mushkin had barely any info on the net about it. The OCZ at least has excellent support so if something goes wrong at least they are there.

I will be the guinee pig and let you guys know once I get my SR. I also contacted sony and the rep. said this memory should be fine.
