I want a laptop that is decently portable for trips, etc but at home I'd like to use an external monitor most of the time... it will probably be a 1920x1200 one. Any suggestions on which model would be best? Would HDMI out be essential?

    Thanks

I use my SZ440 with external monitors all the time. I even connect it to my HDTV and use it as a media PC for playing HD movies (though not with Media Center, just with standard Vista Business). The docking station for the SZ had a DVI output, so I just got a DVI-to-HDMI cable, and a USB-based TOSlink audio adapter. It works great. At work and at my home office, I have additional docking stations and these are connected to standard computer monitors via DVI.

I would get one with dedicated video (nVidia card), but it is not essential. And HDMI to DVI cables take care of the digital, as PTravel said) output process which is better than analog.
