I like VideoLan. It is free and works well. It plays most anything.

What advantages do these applications have over WMP if any?

I just use the Intervideo WinDVD that came with the Sony. I have never ran into a problem with it. I suppose that there are more robust players on the markets with slicker interfaces. but this has always been one bit of bloatware that I have kept and used. I really get annoyed when I put some DVD's in and they try and install some other DVD player. I'll be following this thread just to see if there is something I have been missing all this time, but the one that comes with the computer seems to work great.

I don't think there was a copy of windvd on my machine. I bought the download version of windvd7 and installed it. So far I see a vast improvement over WMP.
