I finally got my brand new FHD LCD today after breaking the old 1600x900 one. Only problem is, I blotched the installation (I followed the instructions letter-for-letter in this thread but I guess my skills couldn't match). My hinges are completely messed up, the plastic chasis around the LCD doesn't fully snap together, and I somehow broke the entire keyboard section. The green light was at first constantly staying on, even when the laptop wasn't on, and then it eventually stopped working all together (though it still powers on the laptop); at the same time, most of the letters on the keyboard stopped working too. I don't know if it's the ribbon or what.

I just don't know what to do at this point. I spent over $550 on the LCD and I ended up breaking the rest of the laptop trying to install it. I'm almost in tears even though I never cry, lol. I'm going to be attending USC film school in the fall for their grad program and was going to rely on the laptop for all my video editing. Now I've lost my biggest tool for the school and don't even have the money to replace it (seeing as how USC's tuition is $$$$$$$$$$$$).

Anyone have any advice? Is it damaged beyond reasonable repair?

Post some photos, let the folks here assess the situation. I can tell you the next course of action is definitely to send it off to a repair shop; I don't suppose you're comfortable messing with it further at this point.

    I love life.

I got so fed up that I just took apart everything again and started over. My main problem with the installation was the wires coming from the LCD to the hinges - they kept blocking everything. Using tape, I was finally able to keep them in place and snap the plastic chasis back together. I like how I spent over 7 hours trying to fix it and managed to get it all back together in less than 30 minutes. Though I did crack the plastic, electric tape holds it together well and you can't even tell there's a crack (it's behind the plastic). I also got rid of a squeeky sound that the Sony techs bequeathed upon the hinges when they last fixed it (right before they decided to drop my warranty).

So now the problem is the keyboard. Do most of the letters not working, the touchpad not working, and the green light not working = broken ribbon or does it = fried keyboard?

EDIT: Also, the graphic switch lights aren't working, though the laptop still detects when I change the modes.
EDIT 2: The light sensor isn't working.

Sounds like the ribbon got damaged.
Did you make sure that you reattached the ribbon properly?

Yeah, I keep reattaching it and the same stuff is still broken. Is there a better way to check if it's broken? I'd hate to buy one (which I'm not even sure if I can afford) and then have that not be the problem.

    EDIT: Speakers aren't working.

How do ribbons get damaged anyway? I'm looking at it and nothing looks immediately broken. Is there a way to tell?

EDIT: Could it be the connectors, actually?

Okay, here's pics of the ribbon. The side that slides-in to the keyboard looks just fine, but now look at the side that goes into the laptop. Doesn't it look like a prong on the right is bent? Does anyone know where that prong should go - maybe I can bend it back.

    Hi SurferJon,

Sorry to hear about your vaio. If you were wondering what the part number for the Keyboard ribbon cable is, it's A1769469A.

You can get it for ~$38 from sony's site right here: https://servicesales.sel.sony.com/ecom/accessories/web/index.jsp

    or from sparepartswarehouse.com.

(On the Sony site it says it's in stock, but as well all know with the $200 1080p screen , it's not always the truth so call in first)

Thanks so much for that link! I was searching by the FCP-199 number and everything was above $100. Called in and ordered the part for $41.76 (with taxes and they waived the shipping).

Aw thank you. :) Let's hope I don't break anything else. It feels like I've been without my Z for the whole summer after the LCD broke and then this.

BTW, does anyone know the part numbers for the screws? I lost two of the medium-sized ones. Are they really necessary if only two are missing?
