    Hi Guys!

i bought a new OCZ Vertex 2 120gb SSD drive for my Sony Vaio Z (vgn-z21wn) a few days ago and having problems with bluescreen during the boot (check the url below for screenshot on the error message). The bluescreen error seems to be random and ill get it 5 of 10 times when i reboot or start up vaio. I tried this on vista at first, but then upgraded to Windows 7 and im still having the same problem with the bluescreen message.

Does anyone know how to fix the problem? its starting to get really annoying!

Screenshot of the bluescreen error: http://i56.tinypic.com/30blmp5.jpg

The Sony Vaio Specs can be found here: http://www1.dealtime.co.uk/xPF-Sony...-P9500-4gb-250gb-13-1-tft-Vista-Bus-SONY-VGNZ

How did you set up your SSD? Is it running 2x SSDs under RAID0 or plainly as seperate drives.

I would suggest you install the Intel RAID manager (Sony Support EU has them available for download) and see how that goes.

It is something to do with the SSD from the looks of your pic. If you have set up 2x SSDs, make sure you are running the appropriate BIOS firmware (the first 2x generations of the VGN-Z 'officially' do not support RAID, whereas the later 3x refreshes do). Quite a few people have updated their 1st and 2nd gen VGN-Z to BIOS firmwares intended for the 3rd, 4th and 5th gen machines without issues.

Though be warned. I remember reading one or two people here who managed to brick their machines doing so.

And try installing W7 if possible. A TRIM capable drive on an OS that officially doesn't support it MIGHT be causing an issue too (though don't quote me on that).

Original Drivers and Applications for VGN-Z5 Series (Windows 7 64-Bit) : Sony Asia Pacific

    That's for a 5th gen Oceania VGN-Z which comes with 2x 128GB SSDs under RAID0

On that page, you are looking for the INTEL STORAGE MANAGER (not RAID MANAGER; my bad...)

Also, make sure you install all the appropriate drivers (from Sony) for your machine. So that's the I/O firmware Parser, chipset firmware etc etc.
The stock drivers that W7 installs for you sometimes have the habit of being out-dated vs Sony's.

I would suggest you buy and install W7. Vista ain't really known to be as friendly as W7 to SSDs. And if you do install W7, install the x64 variant. The link above is for W7 x64, not x86...

    Good luck.

    Hi again!

i upgraded my vaio z (vgn-z21wn) from vista to windows 7 and everything went smoothly. but im still getting the bluescreen (with the same error) from time to time, but not as often as before. The Windows 7 version that i got from Sony is the 32bit version so that link u gave wont work. Are there any 32bit version of the INTEL STORAGE MANAGER?

any other drivers that i can download for Windows 7 32bit?

    thx

You could try the EU sites. Unfortunately, I'm not familiar with Europe's site. Go to Sony Europe Support and the Downloads section. You can choose a model that has a x86 OS and go from there.

...Can I ask how you managed to get a W7 disc for a second gen VGN-Z? I thought they were excluded from the W7 upgrade programme...

Couldy you tell me please which drivers did worked?
I'm having the same problem on my Z31MNB.

Rpleaced the old HDD with a Crucial C300 128GB.
After windows installation is done everything is okay till I reboot the first time.
From then on I am unable to boot, just getting bluescreens.

Edit: Reinstalled windows again 2 times.. I am even not able to boot directly after installation.

    The Screen keeps black..

    Maybe the ssd is corrupt?

What OS are you using? 32 or 4 bit?

mobile intel gm45 express driver download - Google Search

Go to the first search result, select view all from the drivers, select your OS, and get the F6 driver - you'll see what I mean.

    Thanks for the quick reply.
    I'm using Win 7 x64.

    You mean this one?

Just to clarify: I'm using just one hard drive (the new c300 SSD).
I'm a little bit confused, as theres written "used to preinstall RAID driver".

It just their normal chipset drivers, which happen to include RAID components. Do you know how to use the F6 version on windows installation?

I should say that using F6 to install will guarantee the latest chipset drivers - if you still get problems, maybe it is the SSD - search for 'ocz forums' and go to the sandforce section if you still have problems. They're very helpful there.

You need to update the bios to the latest version, otherwise win7 tries to install in uefi mode and causes the blue screens....

    Sounds interesting.
    Indeed, I've an old BIOS-Version.

    But now the problem is:
    How to perform an update?

    Sony writes:
Download the exe, execute it and wait while the wizzard performs an update.
    Reboot your VAIO.

    But: I don't have windows :D

^You'll need to reinstall vista to do that update.

And do NOT try to flash the bios from dos or from a WinPE type session. You'll likely fry the mainboard. Just do a quick and dirty vista install, flash the bios, and then install your win7.

    Ah.
Vista is possible without any problems on the SSD?

    I'll give it a try :D

Edit: I'll answer myself... The same thing... I think I have to replace the SSD with the old HDD to perform the BIOS update :(

You should have no problem with vista. I believe you are having a win 7 issue, not an ssd issue....but only one way to find out!
