so I bought a refurb SA from the outlet the other day which has a built in bluray drive and I was wondering if the bluray drive in it will work well in my daily laptop which is a Z1 before I start disassembling them. thanks in advance

What drive is in the SA? if it's a 9.5mm drive i think it should work. Although the only drives i know that'll work are the Maa drives (UJ242 or something of the sort)

minghi, please post the full name of the drive (see device manager) so we can tell you whether it will fully work (with keyboard eject button at the Z) or not.

thanks for the quick reply guys. I believe it is a 9.5mm too since the SA is also a 'slim' form factor. The device manager shows "Matshi*a BD-CMB UJ152" (I've to asterisk "t" since the forum thinks I'm writing shi* lol and truncates it to Mata)

From what I could find on the internet it should fit into the Z1, can't say if the bezel fits on both. You can check that by opening the drives and turning over the laptops to compare the position of the bezel noses.

I do think it is very unlikely that the keyboard eject button on the Z1 will work with the UJ152 drive, there is no other way to check other than just giving it a try. If it does not work, you can still use one of the other S-Buttons to eject it in windows (see my signature link) or eject it by software in windows explorer.

think i'll do it this evening. I checked the forum and found this but am wondering how much I've to disassemble for only removing the drive.

The Z1 is fairly simple to remove the DVD drive (look for a guide to fix the Z's fan... that's literally disassembling the laptop as you have to flip over the motherboard... gl to me as I need to get to my fan).

For the DVD, you simply have to unscrew the screws on the back, remove the keyboard (watch the ribbon cable!) then just unscrew the few screws holding in place the drive, remove the uSATA cable and then voila, put in your new drive (might be missing 1-2 steps here, but you get the gist of it)

I bought a Bluray Drive from a Sony Vaio VPC-SA3Z9E. It is a UJ-252. The devicemanager shows "MATS HITA BD-MLT UJ252".
-> Installed the drive in my VPC-Z13V9E... -> Eject Button works perfectly.
But it is neccessary to change the brackets from DVD to Bluray Drive and maybe to cut one side of the Bluray Drives housing. The VPC-SA3 drive have standard case. I will investigate that next week to find the best solution.

    regards
    Matthias
