Hi, I just got my Vaio Z series laptop and have not installed anything, only gone through the initial setup process and connected to my home wireless network. The problem is the laptop keeps going to sleep whenever I try to do anything. Touching the keyboard will send it to sleep, clicking the mouse button will sometimes do it. It's on an off, sometimes I can get through a minute, other times it goes to sleep 8 times in a row before I can even type in my password. It's extremely frustrating and i'm wondering if anyone has had this problem before or knows how to fix it?

Note again I have done absolutely nothing to the laptop except connect to a network and turn off the UAC in vista.

Maybe you could check if the battery is securely attached. Does the problem occur when you are operating off of AC power? Welcome to the Z and these forums.

    Couple of things to try.

    1) Double check battery connection. Make sure it is securely connected and any lock switch is correctly set

    2) See if the problem happens when you are running on battery only, on AC only (no battery attached), and on AC with battery attached

    3) Try taking the battery out and unplugging the AC adapter. Then, press and hold the power button for the count of roughly 15 seconds. Next, reattach the battery or AC adapter and power on to see if that hard reset helps to clear the problem

    4) I know it is new and it is rare, but sometimes when Sony is mass copying the O.S. and software installers into the notebooks at the factory, there are a few that glitch and can get past quality control. So, if none of the above help you any, then I would suggest bearing with it until you can access the recover software and let the system restore the factory image to see if it fixes something that may have not installed correctly or is corrupted for whatever reason. The nice thing is that if you get to this option, because it is new, there isn't anything you will loose short of about 30 minutes to an hour while it restores everything.

Try these and let us know if anything helps or if something different happens.

I think you should keep UAC on for security. Unless you are very computer savvy UAC is probably a good thing...something to think about.

Thanks for the replies, I'm going to do some more testing tonight. I started removing some of the sony bloatware last night while it was behaving and after a full restart the problem hasn't happened again. I did note that the charge meter said 100% when the issue was happening and it was plugged into the wall.

I think its your battery setup problem, it happened on my last laptop as well, it sleeps even when a video was playing. The problem solved when I got my batter/power set up done.

hmm.. I have tried a bunch of things at this point. I have changed the power profile to never sleeping, I have made sure the AC is plugged in properly, the battery is snug, I have updated the BIOS from the sony website. I'm at a loss now as to what could be causing it, and it's so random. Sometimes I type a letter and it sleeps, other times like now I can get through a whole paragraph and browse for a while then it will go to sleep. I thought it might be keyboard related but even clicking or moving the mouse can put it to sleep.

ugh.. last step is to restore everything to default.

Update.. ok now i've figured out what is going on and this is just bizzare. When I changed the option for the screen closing to do nothing rather than going to sleep, the computer now doesn't go to sleep. This is despite me never closing the screen mind you. But now instead of going to sleep, the LCD flashes black when I type. Now this led me to do some testing and I've discovered that when a wave my hand over the lower left side of the keyboard I can turn the screen off. When I remove my hand the screen comes back on, similar to when you close the screen the screen turns off then comes back on when you open it.

So I tried to look for some kind of sensor on the keyboard that might be picking this up but I can't see anything, it doesn't appear to be the finger print reader because as I wave my hand over the keys from the lower left it turns off before I get to the trackpad. This is just totally strange and I don't know how to fix it. Anyone got any ideas?

ok so I'm actually just stupid.. all the problems were due to the fact that my watch has a magnetic clip, which was tricking the sensor which must also be magnetic, that the screen was closed when it in fact wasn't.

duh.. solution, take you watch off if it has a magnetic band
