Hi, I just got a Vaio VGN-Z890 off the sonystyle website. As soon as i turned it on I saw a red screen with a pixelated windows symbol. When I got to the desktop screen it looks like there's a red tint covering the whole screen, kinda like someone put red cellophane over it. I thought it was the video card so I updated it from the drivers on the sony support website but I got the same result. I hooked it up to my 32" Samsung tv and it looked beautiful with the right colors. So this leads me to believe that it is a problem with the notebook's lcd. The funny thing is, if I go in and change the gamma and other display settings I can get the screen to change to a green or purple tint. I thought that a failing lcd screen could only be red? If anyone has any experience or thoughts on this I would appreciate it.
-Also, although I am mechanically inclined, I'd rather let sony open up the laptop and check the gpu connection, lest they blame any problems on me in the future for tampering.
I am going to attempt to attach some screen shots so you guys can see for yourselves.

sorry but i can't find any problem in you attached pics?? the colors is very normal :S ?
-
Did you try adjusting the colors through windows settings or through the NVIDIA Control Panel ?
-
How about uploading pics of the screen taken with a digicam?
-
Ok. I took the two attached pictures with screen capture. I don't know why they appear normal within the screen shots. So does this confirm that it is definitely an lcd problem? I tried changing color settings in both windows and the nvidia panels. Both just produce either an entirely green, red, purple, or somewhere in between color. I want to clarify that it's not just a slight tinge (like when some people complain their screen is yellow). Everything on screen is a shade of red and I can't see any other color at all. I can try to take pictures with a digicam later.

try to open recovery manager ( by pressing F10 while booting ) and check if the problem still exist or not ??

if i were you i would report it to Sony right away, atm im thinking that its your LCD and since you've JUST JUST boight this laptop you should report any problem asap, when things like this come in 1st 30day or 90 days then they fixed these things right away
but its better you take a clear picture of the LCd with a camera to show them -
also, when in stamina mode, the screen flickers and becomes pixelated. When on speed mode, the screen is solid. The red tinge remains on both modes

bump please. just got off the phone with sony support. They couldn't figure it out of course.

Go to the nearest sony store I would think so at least people there could check it out. Did you order it online or did you buy instore? PM me if you need more help.

There's definitely a pinkish (or maybe reddish depending on how one calls it) tint to almost all the Vaio Z notebook screens that I've seen & what my eyes can detect. However, I cannot tell how bad is yours, how much you can tolerate the pinkish tint, whether your screen is in fact defective, etc. I would suggest that you send it back to Sony for an exchange or something. Good luck.

I ordered it online. The screen is definitely not normal. I can barely even distinguish different colors...they are all a shade of red. Sony support said a tech is going to call me and possibly make a house call. Does anyone have any experience with this? I really just want to return it and get an entirely new one but I custom ordered it with 7200 rpm 320 gb drive and 4 gb ram.

bumppp please. Any ideas before I send it in to sonycare?

If you can take some photos of what you are talking about, contact Sony Customer Support via email and detail the description of your concern regarding the screen and provide the photos in that email as well.

I haven't been able to get a hold of a camera yet. After contacting sony again, they agreed to let me return the laptop and send me a new one. Maybe they can tell me what was wrong with it. I suspect it is the backlight or inverter for the lcd panel. Hopefully, I'll get a functioning laptop by the end of the month. Thanks for the help
