Ok so my brother got a brand new vaio (Model VGN-NW270F) about 3 weeks ago. Had no issues with it right away. Then my dad loaded some software on it (Norton Antivirus and Clean Access Agent).
According to my brother, the next time he started it up, the touch pad stopped working. Also, you couldn't type in the password box, the only way to do so was select hibernate mode, then when you started again it would allow you to put in the password. The touch pad however would still not work. So since I am pretty good with computers, my brother had me take it home after Xmas and try and figure out the problem.
So yesterday I started trying to figure it out. I could not find an option to mess with the touch pad settings. Initially I figured somehow the touch pad had gotten turned off and it would be a pretty simple fix. But I can not find any type of settings or anything like that. Also, I don't know if it is supposed to be, but the touch pad is not listed in device manager...just the usb mouse we've been using.
So I went into the Vaio care program and figured I'd go to the sony support and see if they could help. Did a live chat and explained the problem, and the person I talked to said to download this program, I cannot remember what it was called but it was some sort of software for the touch pad. He said that should fix the problem. So I did that, and the touch pad still didn't work. So I figured maybe I had to restart for the settings to take effect. After restarting....the touch pad doesn't work, and now the keyboard won't work either! So now I have no way of doing anything. Any suggestions would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance!

You're the second person with a keyboard and touchpad problem on an NW....

Try using recovery discs ( Warning - this will wipe out any of your data)- if the problem persists have it send in for warranty repairs. -
You might want to try deleting Norton, if you haven't already done so. Norton seems to be the root of an issue many times.
I suggest you finding some other firewalls like Microsoft Security Essentials (which is complimentary if your windows is authentic)
Oh, before doing anything.....
Try System Restore. This fixes pretty much every software issues.
Restore your system to the point when the trackpad worked. -
If it didn't have problems before Norton, then getting rid of that is the only answer (unless your brother did something else after that).
I personally wouldn're recommend System Restore, but a clean install altogether; just recover your NW back to the factory state. System restore does sometimes forget to play with the registry and SOMETIMES does make the problem worse.
Microsoft Security Essentials is good and its free, though I've been experiencing bugs with it (on both Vista x86 and x64, and on W7 x64) - some process eat-up CPU despite scans being finished, and they continue hogging 4-5 hours after the scan finishes. MS had this problem with OneCare as well (the same process in Task Manager). -
Clean install or full recovery is recommended.
Microsoft Security Essentials is pretty good - I use it too(preferred KIS, but couldn't stand the lag on my SSD)

Well I guess the problem that's more important now is more that the keyboard and touch pad won't work after installing the file that the sony tech help guy told me would fix the problem. So I now have no way to even put my password in to load windows.
If I'm able to log in I will definitely uninstall norton and see if that does anything, then try a restore.
By the way this computer is running windows 7 if that matters at all.
Also I believe the software the vaio care tech guy had me install was called Alps. -
Try connecting an external mouse and using on-screen keyboard (button in the bottom-left corner).
I have the same exact problem - it seems to be either a windows 7 keyboard/mouse driver bug, or (more likely) a problem with the hardware/drivers on the laptop.
I'm going to send mine in, let the warranty take care of it. -
Oh - don't bother with the recovery/software reinstall, nothing helped on my side (I have even tried clean win7 install).
Brand new Vaio with major issues. Please help!
