I have an FW290 that I bought last November, and I was in an unfortunate situation where I was outputting the sound to external speakers via a straight stereo cable. Since the headphone and mic ports are in the front, I didn't realize how dangerous that was until one day I stood up from my chair and my hand accidentally pressed down on the cable, which cracked the headphone jack and pointed it downward a bit. Now I won't get any sound out of the headphone port.

My warranty won't cover it since it counts as external damage, and I couldn't even create a repair claim on Sony's website. However, I did get a letter about getting an extended warranty which includes Accidental Damage from Handling.

Do you guys think this would be covered?

You could try an external usb sound port. I also had a problem with the port on my sony and did not want to send my laptop away for several weeks. Worked well for me. Best Buy had them but I don't know if they still do. You do have to use the same USB port each time you plug it in.
