How hard is it and where should I buy a replacement hinge? I let a co-worker borrow it and the hinge went out and I have plans on doing the replacement myself.

    I have a Sony Vivo PCG-F270, bought in 1999.

Check on ebay. Some times old computers that died are sold as spare parts on ebay. I was once checking for Sony FX-370 and found tons of spare parts.
    Good luck on the repair!
