I bought a Sony Vaio VGN S5M/S laptop just over a month ago and I was more than a little miffed when it broke. From what I can tell (And I'm by no means a hardware expert) the backlight has broken on the screen. I've managed to send my laptop off to Sony again but I'm wondering about a couple of things. Firstly how long is the repair likely to take? Secondly will they repair it or give me a new system? And lastly has anyone had any experiences with the repair system at Sony?
    Thanks alot.

The backlight going out isn't terribly uncommon. It could be the light itself or the connector cable. In any event, they'll probably check the cable then replace the LCD if that's not it. They won't replace the machine. Should take around 7-10 days to make the round trip, if parts are in stock.

My Sony S460 developed a 2 inch wide dull strip down the right hand side 3 months after i bought it, spoke to sony UK who wanted to charge me 12 pounds for the pleasure (bought my laptop in US) they said it was a lcd problem and not a backlight, apparently its a common fault on the model, but they still refused to honour the warranty as it was a USA model ?????? international company with a market stall policy:noisyfan:
